OWC Mercury Extreme G4/1.33GHz w/2MB DDR L3 Cache: (from sample provided)

  • CPU: Motorola 1.33GHz rated 7455A revison 3.3
  • 256KB on-chip L2 cache (@cpu clock speed)
  • 2MB DDR L3 Cache
    (Samsung K7D803671B-HC33 x2, BGA package)

The Mercury Extreme 1.33GHz has jumper settings for CPU speeds. The installation guide (PDF version here) includes settings for up to 1.4GHz for 100MHz and 133MHz bus Macs. It does not have jumper settings for the voltage regulator (CPU core voltage) like the Giga Designs models. (Giga Designs does not include vreg settings and notes changing them voids the warranty, although I created some tables for the previous G4/800 (no L3), G4 1GHz (DDR L3) and G4 1.25GHz models that are on the specs page of those past reviews.)

Giga Designs G4 1GHz and G4/800MHz (current versions)

  • CPU: Motorola 1GHz rated 7455A (1GHz model) and 800MHz 7451
  • 256KB on-chip L2 cache (@cpu clock speed)
  • 2MB SDR L3 Cache
    (Samsung K7A803609B-QC25 x2)

Giga Design's website has their current model CPU speed jumper settings info included on their Installation page. I didn't have time to create a table of Vreg settings for these two models, but I did for the 1.25GHz (DDR L3) model and original G4/800 (no L3) and 1GHz (DDR L3) models. I can't say if the new models settings are the same however but the 1GHz SDR L3 had the same default jumper settings for the Vreg as the DDR 1GHz version I reviewed some months back.

Warranty:
The OWC and Giga Design upgrade docs listed a 30 day Money-Back Guarantee and a 3 year limited warranty as of the review date.

For owner reports on CPU upgrades (any brand/mac model), search my Rate Your CPU Upgrade database.
I stress that owners of any upgrade should use it for several weeks at least before posting an entry in my database. If there are problems - double check the installation/settings and contact the vendor immediately if you need help. They often can provide a solution or identify the source of the problem.
