Maxtor ATA/100 Drive/PCI IDE Card Issues Noted:
Last Updated: 12/11/2000, 8:48 AM
One of the Drive Compatibilty Database entries from the weekend was from a 7500 owner with a Sonnet Tempo (aka Acard ATA/66) card that reported problems (possible data corruption) with large files copied over the network from the IDE card connected Maxtor Plus 45 (ATA/100) 15GB drive. He noted swapping the drive with a Western Digital solved the problem, as did copying the file from an onboard SCSI drive.

" Hi Mike,
I wish to submit the following problem related to Sonnet Tempo PCI to IDE Card, Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 UltraATA-100 15 GB HD (model : 51536H2) and MacOS network file transfers.

Some info about my configuration:
- PowerMac 7500 (VAL 4 MB) with XLR8 Carrier Zif G3/400 (50MHz BUS)
- 112 MB Ram (partially interleaved)
- MacOS 9.0.4
- PCI A: Sonnet Tempo PCI Card (with latest ACard 6260M 3.10 firmware)
- PCI B: Keyspan 2-ports USB PCI Card
- PCI C: 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 PCI (1.1.2 drivers)
- Quantum 4,3 GB SCSI HD connected to the internal SCSI bus.
- Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45 UltraATA-100 15 GB HD (model : 51536H2) connected to the Tempo Card (with UltraATA66-cable).

I've used this configuration for 3 weeks without no problems at all. Two days ago I've transferred a 9 MB StuffIt file from my 7500 to my PowerBook 1400 (using MacOS built in file sharing via ethernet). While decompressing the file on PB, StuffIt Expander told me that "the integrity of file couldn't be verified. Use it with caution". I've verified that this corruption problem occurs especially with large file (for example the 32,6 MB 4x4 Evolution Public Beta Installer fails to launch when transferred to PB1400 exiting with -29 MacOS error). After many, many, many test I've noticed that this file corruption problem do not appears if I copy the file to the internal SCSI HD and then (from there) to the network-shared PB1400 HD or if I replace the Maxtor drive with my previous Western Digital Caviar UltraATA-66 10GB HD (model 102BA).

Summarising I've discovered that:
- this corruption problem seems to be only network related because after 3 weeks of heavy use I've not a single file corrupted on my Maxtor IDE HD or on my Quantum SCSI HD. In particular, I've verified that this corruption problem do not occurs when I duplicate the file into the same Maxtor IDE HD and when I copy the file from the IDE HD to the SCSI HD and vice-versa.

- the network transferred (and corrupted) file has the same size of the original file on the IDE HD.

- the problem occurs every time if the file is transferred from my Maxtor IDE HD to the network shared PB1400 HD.

- the problem disappears every time if the same file is transferred from my SCSI HD to the network shared PB1400 HD..

- the problem occurs only with MacOS built-in file sharing: I've tried to transfer the same file using HotLine server running on the 7500 and HotLine client running on the PB1400 without problems.

but the true surprise is this:
- the problem disappears if I replace the Maxtor HD with a Western Digital Caviar UltraATA-66 10 GB HD (model : 102BA).

A cable issue? a conflict between Tempo Card and ATA-100 HD, a conflict between Tempo Card and this Maxtor HD? a conflict between Tempo Card and PowerMac MACE Ethernet ? a conflict with Tempo Card and MacOS file sharing ? ...
What you think about ?
Bye.
Pier Luigi Covarelli"

I suggested he try the 3.08 firmware version which is linked in the FAQ's IDE PCI Controller section (unless Acard removed the file from their site).

If any readers have other suggestions or have seen this problem, please let me know.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
