| Latest feedback on yesterday's Firmware Updates |
| Below is reader feedback on the firmware updates released yesterday (MacBook Air, MacBook/MB Pro, iMac, AL kbd, etc.) - most mails so far noted no problems/changes seen so far - a few mentioned something specific and one MBP owner noted he's not been able to get the update to apply (error message). I updated my AL keyboard fine but had one mail today from an iMac owner that said the update failed and he has a useless keyboard now. (I wrote to ask for more details.)
"MacBook Air EFI Update - installed it, it activated itself. It rebooted the MB Air. Did the flashy thingy, rebooted and said successfully completed... (an earlier MB Air owner thought the update resulted in lower fan speeds so I asked Kevin if he'd noticed that.-Mike) Now that you mention it, so far fan speeds seem more tame yes. It's not as easy to go to 6200 rpm. Normal surfing 2500 rpm. If I play Flash then it maxes out the fan, but for surfing and light work its seems to be better behaved. Its a good upgrade from my Powerbook G4 1.3GHz...
-Kevin"

Just thought I would let you know that we applied the MacBook Air EFI firmware update. We are seeing much less fan use and no downsides (yet)!

Another MacBook Air owner wrote:
"
I've updated (MacBook Air EFI update 1.0) - previously no problems, still no problems 2 hrs later. I don't notice any change in performance - must be addressing specific issues some units experience...
(I asked if he'd noticed any reduced fan speeds - he late wrote)
3 days later - still running good and YES, I no longer hear or notice the fan kicking in - typically I would hear it fire up for awhile each day - nothing yet, yeah!
-Mark"
One MBP owner wrote he's not been able to apply the update:
"
My MBP (17) with Boot Camp and Parallels installed FAILED to update with 1.5. It is a GUID partition as from the factory with Boot Camp installed using defaults. 1.5 downloads and loads the "package". But, when the package attempts to launch it returns with a failure message and the code "28 : 3".
(UPDATE: On 4/21/2008 Apple posted Mac Book Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.5.1, which fixed an issue some had with the v1.5 updater not applying.-Mike)
Now, at each boot, the package attempts to install itself. I resolve with a "Force Quit".
Boot Partition ID is MBP31.0070.B02 currently. Apple "self-help" pages are worthless. Haven't called the service center yet - - a service I PAID for but have never successfully used! -Joseph B."
"Just wanted to add that this firmware update finally resolved the loss of the brightness settings after a PRAM reset.
I reset the PRAM on my MacBook Pro and it would always default to the highest brightness after a reboot.
I had tried many things to resolve it and nothing would fix it.
-William R."
Most replies so far are like this one (no problems, no changes noticed so far)
"
All is good with my MBP 2.4Ghz 17" and the firmware update - three hours and stable. -Jim

One reader last night said the update fixed his clamshell mode/ext. display problem seen since the 10.5.2/Leopard graphics update - although not everyone had that problem.
FYI: Today after waking the AL iMac from sleep (OS X 10.5.2 w/all updates applied) for the nth time today I saw some major screen corruption (corrupted text in windows, several large black squares with white spots/lines). Slept it again (menu item) and woke it - Mail had corrupted text still, so I quit/relaunched Mail which cleared its window but still saw a large black (w/white noise spots/lines) square over one of the Safari windows that moved with the web page window. Never saw this before in months of daily use before the firmware update but then problems can appear at any time. I put the system to sleep again and on the next wake got the BBOD (beachball cursor - can't select anything, nor force quit...). Forced a shutdown and rebooted. Maybe some other issue, but odd that it happened for the first time after the firmware update.
And BTW - the next day I saw the same thing - although I'd slept/woke the iMac about a dozen times during the day, at appx 8PM Thursday night on waking it the screen was totally corrupted again (worse than yesterday)...
