New Mac Nvidia Graphics Cards this Fall?
A reader posted an interesting reply to a question asking about new graphics cards for the Mac from Nvidia in the forums here:

" Yes, we are working on a refresh part for the high end gaming enthusiest [sic] market for the Macintosh platform. We are not able to discuss information on unreleased products, however NVIDIA likes to keep a 6-9 month cycle for video cards, which also includes video cards for the Macintosh platform. You should expect to see a new card announcement for the Macintosh sometime in the fall. "

I've written my Nvidia contact to see if he can verify this, but I have no reason to doubt the reader's post. (Since the Geforce2MX, all future Nvidia graphics chips are to be Mac compatible [bi-endian, etc.].) ATI's Radeon 8000 series only heats up the graphics card wars and it's about time for a refresh of cards from Nvidia. (They also recently announced a notebook version of the Quadro workstation chip call the Quadro2Go.) See the info below from the same reader which might be an indication of what's coming.

Rumored Features of GeForce3 Ultra and GeForce4:
A PC 3D site has posted some rumored features of the GeForce3MX and GeForce3 Ultra cards that are expected soon from Nvidia. There's also info about features of the next generation GeForce4 noted in this thread.

Hopefully a) we'll see these cards for Macs [I wish at retail, not just with a new system, but that's less likely] and b) the drivers enable all the features and application/game software will take advantage of the advanced features before the next generation card comes along.
(Par for the course seems to be that the next generation of cards are out before the previous ones have all their features supported or used.)

Sonnet Cuts Prices on CPU Upgrades:
Sonnet has a press release today noting they've cut prices again by as much as $50 on about 1/2 of their line of CPU upgrades, including their PowerBook 1400, 7200/8200 and L2 cache slot models. Their G3/500 ZIF upgrade now lists for $299.95, about the price of OEM models in the past.

(Still no >500MHz CPU Upgrades available from any manufacturer yet... hopefully later this year.)

Dual G4/800 Altivec Fractal Demo GigaFlops Scores:
" Mike,
We had some dual 800 MHz machines ship to our store today and I was able to run the Altivec fractal demo (carbon) in both OS X and OS 9.2.

We were running version 10.0.4 with 384 megs of RAM, 80 gig, etc. Running on OS X, I was able to squeak out 5,738.7 megaflops or about 5.7 gigaflops using the settings of 65536 for Maximum count, 10 for color speed, and 2 for zoom factor. With all of the same settings on Mac OS 9.2, I was able to achieve 6,138.5 megaflops or about 6.1 gigaflops.

For comparison's sake, my dual 533 system will eek out about 4 gigaflops using the aforementioned settings. On an 867 MHz G4 system, I am able to achieve about 2.9 gigaflops using the same settings.

I am including some screen shots of the dual 800 system only (one is in OS X and the other is in OS 9.2.1) and hope that you will post them so your readers can see the performance advantage of a second processor.
Matt "

I'm starting a page on Dual G4/800 feedback/tests, etc. which will have Matt's screenshots included. If any other Dual G4/800 owners would like to submit info/test results, etc. email me.
Note: The G4/733 with Geforce3 review includes notes on real world tests and benchmarks, with links to download benchmarks used. I'd also be curious to know what CPU revision is in the Dual 800 systems. Use PPC Checker to check. (If it reports "unknown revision", it's a later than rev 2.0 7450 CPU version.)

The reader that wrote the article on using a OEM Matshita DVD/CDRW Combo drive modified for a PB G3 sent his modified iTunes support file for those that do not want to make the modifications noted on the article. (Disclaimer: There are no warranties or assurances that this support file will work for everyone.)

Conflict with QT5 Sound Manager Extension and G4 CPU Upgrade Software?
" Hi Mike,
I noticed in your CPU upgrade database someone (Sondjata Olatunji) recently (7/30/2001) reported a problem with a Sonnet G4/400 upgrade causing artefacts in QuickTime video in their 8600/250. They said downgrading to QT 4 solved the problem, but they weren't happy about it.

I just installed an XLR8 MPe Carrier w/ MPe 450MHz G4 in my 8500. Lo and behold, I saw the same artefacts in my video, both via on-board video and my ATi Rage Orion graphics card. Downgrading to QT 4 also got rid of them. I decided to do a conflict test to see what the problem was. Conflict Catcher 8.0.9 found that the XLR8 MACh Speed Extension (both v2.5.0 and 1.4.3 were tested) conflicted with Sound Manager 3.6.7, which was installed with QT 5.0.1. I replaced it with Sound Manager 3.6.5 (from QuickTime 4.1.2) and the problem went away.

No other parts of QT 5 caused a problem. I did not test Photoshop (which Sondjata said also had a problem).

I sent this info to XLR8, to see if they can find a fix. Since it happened to both a Sonnet card and an XLR8 card, my suspicion is that it is a problem with enabling the G4 upgrade's backside cache, and not the particular extension. Hopefully, a solution will be found, although the downgrade is not a big deal (so far).
Phil Lefebvre "

I asked Phil if he could test with either the backside cache disabled (via control panel) or with the XLR8 extension disabled. He replied that disabling the cache via the Control Panel did not help, only disabling the Extension.

Blast from the Past - News pages from 1, 2 and 3 years ago:
I've had several readers ask that I restore a news item that I used to call "Blast from the Past" where links to past news pages from a year, two years, etc. ago here are included in the daily news. (Sometimes these old pages are a bit embarrassing - and in many cases the offsite links may not work, and comments there were accurate on the date posted regarding upgrade availability, etc.)
