Dual G5 2GHz Tests with PShop7, FCP4 and Soundtrack
There's a page at with Photoshop7/Final Cut Pro 4/Soundtrack tests using a "pre-production" Dual 2GHz G5. The comparison G4 machine was a single 933MHz CPU. (It would have been nice to see how it compared to a dual G4 1.25GHz or dual G4 1.42GHz model, but the results are still interesting.)

More info on Giga Designs CPU Upgrade Core Voltage Settings
Yesterday's news had a note on Giga Designs CPU core voltage settings (link to tables of settings in past reviews here, note to not run the new 1GHz 7455A model over 1.65V, etc.). OWC replied to that post with a link to a new page at their site with Giga Designs recommended voltage settings by CPU type/speed.

Motu PCI card/G5 Compatibility info
The issue of PCI Card compatibility with the new G5 systems has been mentioned before here several times (3.3V powered PCI card required, etc. - see prev. info at the bottom of the G5 info page here for past comments/notes on ATTO SCSI and Digidesign Audio cards). Today there's a page with Motu card compatability info at this Musicmac page.

SAI packet writing CDRW software for OS X
*Update* - a reader that tried this software with a Pioneer DVR-106 and Yamaha F1 under 10.2.6 said it did absolutely nothing. He included a copy of the reply from SAI offering a refund and saying that it was currently only compatible with 10.1, not 10.2. I wrote SAI sales to ask they note that on their product page.

(from a reader email, I've not used this software personally)

"Software Architechts ( ) now has UDF packet writing software for Mac OS X:
writeCD-RW. $30.00. This is the only solution I know of that allows you to treat a CD-RW like a big floppy disk in OS X. (For OS 8/9 was the miserably supported and buggy Direct CD from Roxio/Adaptec.)
Their similar writeDVD is still OS 9 only ($70).
- Paul"

Checking their site finds this page on their writeCD-RW software. The list of supported drives is very short (but may not include all drives supported).

    " Systems and Drives Supported
WriteCD-RW! for Mac OS X supports the following Mt. Rainier drives (ATAPI) only.

  • HLDS (LG) GCE-8400B
  • LiteOn 40125S
  • Mitsumi CR-48XATE
  • Mistumi CR-48XCTE
  • NEC NR-9100
  • NEC NR-9200
  • Philips Combi RW16x10/DVD
  • Teac CD-W540E
  • Yamaha CRW-3200

If any reader tries this software in OS X, send a report with your drive/system/OS details and how well it worked. Thanks.

Burn support files for LG GCE-8523B (OS 9/X), CyberDrive CW-99 (OS X 10.1.5), Pacific Digital Mach52 (10.2.6), Pioneer DVR-105 (10.1.5)
Marcelo Maia sent Modified LGCDR files for OS 9 and OS X 10.2.6 iTunes burn support with an LG GCE-8523B (52x24x52x) CDRW drive. (The OS 9 LGCDR file replaces the existing one in the OS 9 System Folder/Extensions/Authoring Support files folder.)

Mike Batt sent a 10.1.5 burn support plugin for iTunes burn support with a CyberDrive CW-99 (52x24x52x) CDRW drive.

Randy Silva sent a Modified Pioneer device plugin for burn support in OS X 10.1.5 with a Pioneer DVR-105 drive. (Later Jaguar/10.2.x versions have native burn support already for this drive.)

Joe Mac sent a Pacific Digital device plugin for use with their "Mach52" (52x24x52x) CDRW drive and 10.2.6.

Note: As always, a modified file replaces the original file of the same name. Search in the Finder to find the (long path) in OS X to the original file. (Exceptions are new plugins like the Pacific Digital and Cyberdrive files, no existing file to overwrite, just place in the same folder as the existing OS X CDR device plugin files.) Either reboot to OS 9 to replace the file or use the terminal as root (for Jag enable root user in Netinfo manager - see this Apple kbase doc on how. Best to not leave root user enabled however). These files are provided "as-is", and may not work flawlessly with all systems/configurations. I'll add these files to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section as soon as I can for future reference.

Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 2 new reports this morning (reader entries from Yesterday; entries today are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 8,651. Here's a summary of the update added today (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):

  • Other World Computing G4 1.2GHz in G4/AGP (rated 8)
  • Sonnet G3/350 in 7600 (rated 10)
(My full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades w/apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked here.)

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). For detailed reviews with performance tests and install tips, see the CPU Upgrades page.)

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 6 new reports added (reader entries from Yesterday; entries today are added the next newsday morning). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 11,110 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)

    Combo DVD+CDR Drives:
  • IDE Plextor PX-320A (20x10x40x + 12x DVD-ROM) in B&W G3 (OS X)
(not bootable from CD he said, and using modified burn support plugin)
(FYI - Illustrated CD/DVD/CDRW drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT, B&W G3 and 8600/9600 Macs.)
  • USB Sony CRX-100 used w/Beige G3 (OS X)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE Maxtor DiamondMax Plus8 40GB in iMac (OS 9)
  • IDE Western Digital 40GB in iMac (OS X)
(problems noted due to WD drive set to Master when the only drive on the cable - as noted in guides here, set WD drives to "single drive" when alone on the bus to prevent boot hangs.)
  • Firewire (IDE drive in FW case) Western Digital WD2000JB 200GB used w/Powerbook G4 (OS X)
  • Firewire (IDE drive in FW case) Maxtor Diamondmax Plus9 used w/Powerbook G4 (OS X)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
