Another Report on 2009 Mac Pro Northbridge Heatsink Retainer Repair:
Another reader report on this problem (causing over 100°C temperatures), replacing the retainers and thermal paste. Due to length added his report/repair notes to the earlier info/pix.
(As I mentioned earlier, I suspect over time (and thermal cycles), the original plastic retainers for the NB heatsink may break, which leads to very higher temperatures in use. If you think you may have this problem, as mentioned in the earlier post you can pull the CPU tray (unlatch the 2 levers, slides out) and check the heatsink/retainer (good time to blow out dust buildup also) and/or use (freeware) Temperature Monitor to check the reported Northbridge temperature in use.)
