2008 Mac Pro owner feedback page updated
I've added 4 more reports to the 2008 Mac Pro feedback page. (Included are more reports on graphics/freeze problems - one reader saying avoiding Graphics Update 1.0 solved a repeatable problem he had. One 2600 owner that never had any issues said he's been running dual displays since day 1 - some think that may help, but I wonder if anything is a universal fix at this point.)

Mac Drive Upgrades/Compatibility Database Updated
The Mac Drive/Storage Upgrades Database had 9 more reports added this morning. Current total - 16,364. (Searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • IDE ASUS DRW-1814BL in (Sawtooth) G4/AGP (OS X 10.4.x)
  • IDE NEC/Sony Optiarc AD 7360A in (AL) Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.5.2)
(filed under both NEC and Sony Brands - includes notes on flashing (w/PC) to set master mode)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-115D in (2002 Quicksilver) G4/AGP (OS X 10.5.x)
  • IDE Sony DRU-840A in G5 Tower (OS X 10.5.x)
  • USB (cased) LG GSA-E60L (20x max) used with (Pismo) PowerBook G3 2000 (OS X 10.3.9)
(using patchburn3 - required for 10.3.x iApps burn support and USB 2.0 PCcard. Problems noted with burns. Personally I'd choose a FW cased drive over USB even for modern macs.)

    DVD-R Drives:
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-105 in (lower bay) Mac Pro (OS X 10.4)
(problems noted -discs don't mount she said)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE Hitachi 120GB (7200rpm) in (CRT) iMac slot-loading (OS X 10.4.11)
(pre-LCD iMacs don't have native big drive support)
  • Firewire (cased) Samsung HM120JC 120GB used with (SR) MacBook Pro (OS X 10.4.11)
(includes notes on drive not mounting if connected to Santa Rosa MBP, but does with MacBook and PB G4 running same OS version)
  • Firewire (Ministack case) Western Digital GP 750GB used w/Mac Mini (OS X 10.5.x)
(noted WD GP ("green") drive ran very cool/quiet compared to previous drives in that case)

You can read full reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). The database includes reports on Optical Drives (Blu-Ray, DVD, CD/CDR, etc.), Hard Drives, Tape drives, Removable media (ORB, ZIP, MO drives), NAS (Network Attached Storage), in all interface types (IDE, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters).
If you've added/upgraded a drive in your Mac send me the details (drive info/speed rating/mac model/OS used, etc.). Note: Please use the drive for at least a week before reporting on it and test for booting from Disc with internal Optical Drives (as well as burning discs). Thanks.

Mac CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with another report this morning. Total to date: 10,339. Here's a summary of the latest addition (search database by upgrade brand, mac model, etc. for a complete list/comments of all user reports on matching criteria - latest reports first).

  • Other World Computing Mercury G4 1.2GHz (7455) in (Sawtooth 400Mhz originally) G4/AGP (rated 10)

(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the G4 upgrade reviews and G3 upgrade reviews pages. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, send a review with your experience (performance/stability/installation, etc.), Mac Model/Upgrade brand info and overall rating (1= worst to 10=best). If you can, please run some tests with the original CPU vs the upgrade (for example time some tests with your favorite app, game, etc. - see full reviews here for example tests with common apps/games/benchmarks.)
