(Update: I've posted a page with the first 2008 Mac Pro Owner reports, including notes/tips on system lockups that both the first two owners saw.)
(original 1/8/2008 post follows)
I was surprised to see Apple announce the new Mac Pro before Macworld SF. Heres a clip from their news page:
"Apple Introduces the new Mac Pro The fastest Mac ever, the new Mac Pro has eight processor cores and a new system architecture that delivers up to twice the performance of its predecessor.*
It combines two of Intel's new 45 nanometer Quad-Core Xeon processors running up to 3.2 GHz, powerful new graphics and up to 4TB of internal storage, offering the ideal system for creative professionals, 3D digital content creators and scientists. The standard 8-core configuration starts at just $2,799.
* Based on estimated results comparing a preproduction 2.8 GHz 8-core Mac Pro with a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro running professional applications like Maya, modo and Logic Pro."
The revised Mac Pros use the new Intel HarperTown CPUs with 12MB of L2 cache per processor (each pair of cores shares 6MB), 1600MHz frontside bus, new SSE4 Instructions and faster FBDIMM memory (800MHz vs 667MHz previously). Also included is PCI Express 2.0 support ("a 16-lane dedicated graphics slot now features PCI Express 2.0 with up to twice the transfer rate of PCI Express") and new Graphics cards, starting at the low end with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT w/256MB GDDR3, the (value leader IMHO) NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT w/512MB GDDR3 and at the (very) high end, the NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 w/1.5GB GDDR3 vram (and 3D stereo port). Apple has a page with Performance comparisons (Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Logic Pro, PShop CS3, Maya, Modo, Cinebench, etc.) vs some previous systems (some tests used G5 Quad 2.5GHz as comparison system, others used previous Mac Pro 2.66GHz system). For more details on the new models, see the Specs page
The $2799 (USA) Standard Configuration is Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Xeons, 2GB RAM, 16x SuperDrive, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB, 320GB HD. CTO Options include up to 3.2GHz CPUs, up to 32GB RAM, up to 1TB HDs (x4), RAID card, etc. I expected to see a Blu-Ray drive option but it's not listed on that page.
Per the Apple store - here's the CTO CPU, Memory, Graphics card and Hard Drive option prices from the $2799 (USA) base/standard configuration. (Note: std config. estimated shipping time was 1-2 business days - but adding the Nvidia 8800 GT or Quadro FX5600 option bumps delivery est. to "3-5 Weeks". Faster CPUs only added a couple days, both based on checks around 11:30AM Eastern today. Despite the delays, I'd definitely choose the 8800 GT however as the best price/performance value.)
CPU Options:
- One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (quad-core) [Subtract $500]
- Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) (standard)
- Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) [Add $800]
- Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) [Add $1600]
RAM (800MHz DDR2 ECC FBDIMMs) (see above for much lower priced ram)
- 2GB (2 x 1GB) (standard)
- 4GB (4 x 1GB) [Add $500]
- 8GB (4 x 2GB) [Add $1500]
- 16GB (8 x 2GB) [Add $3500]
- 16GB (4 x 4GB) [Add $4300]
- 32GB (8 x 4GB) [Add $9100]
Storage (options shown for Bay 1)
- 320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (standard)
- 500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s [Add $100]
- 750GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s [Add $250]
- 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s [Add $400]
- 300GB 15,000-rpm SAS [Add $650]
Graphics Cards: (either Nvidia card option adds 3-5 weeks)
- ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB (Two dual-link DVI) (standard)
- 2 x ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB [Add $150]
- NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI) [Add $200]
- 3 x ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB [Add $300]
- 4 x ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB [Add $450]
- NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB (Stereo 3D, two dual-link DVI) [Add $2850]
Again I'd pick the 8800 GT considering price/performance, despite the delay. There are other options of course, one that I'd select is the AirPort Extreme (802.11n) card for $50.
