Guide to HD install in Optical Drive Bay in 2008 Mac Pro
Oliver had put a WD Raptor hard drive in the Optical drive bay (w/isolation) for reduced noise in his previous Mac Pro (ref: April 2007 How I "Silenced" a WD Raptor in a Mac Pro) and this weekend sent info/pix for an article on Mac Pro 2008: Guide to optical bay hard drive installation. (I updated both those articles to include a link to the mfr's product page for the HD decoupler he used.)

2008 Mac Pro owner reports page updated
I've updated the 2008 Mac Pro owner feedback page again today with 10 more owner reports. (Includes requested pix of 2008 model drive screw/rail springs differences, notes on "Proto1" motherboard revision ID, FCP performance, more reports of freezes/reboots on wake from sleep, ImagePrint RIP issue (Fixed), one complaint of a "hum" noise, and more notes on running from OS X Tiger with the 2600XT card - no Quartz Extreme support/no core image hardware acceleration.)

Mac Mini CPU Upgrade reports page updated
I've updated the page of reader feedback on Mac Mini Core 2 Duo CPU Upgrades (Chip Swaps) with a mail from a reader this weekend on swapping in a $125 Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz chip in his (refurb) Core Duo Mac Mini. (Socketed CPU is a big plus...)

HP Inkjet update for Leopard (for 10.5.1/repair permissions issues)
Yesterday while looking for an HP scanner update a reader had mentioned, I noticed an (incorrectly dated IMHO) HP inkjet Update for Leopard on their Software/Drivers page for my C7180 AIO (bottom of the page there) - titled "Update Required: Mac OS X v10.5.x for HP driver v9.7" with a "10/2007" date, yet a get info on the updater I downloaded shows a Jan 11th, 2008 created date and per the info on the Update D/L page it is an update for v9.7 (full download dated Nov 2007) users that either updated to 10.5.1 or ran repair permissions on their HP software install (as I mentioned I had in the article on my HP C7180 AIO w/OS X Leopard using v9.7 beta software). After repairing permissions I saw the problems they note in the update page - missing print and paper tray options. I had installed the 'full' 9.7 (beta) download (dated Nov 2007) on a 10.5.1 system back in December and didn't see the update there at that time. The HP Update download page (which has a "release date" earlier than the full 9.7 beta download it's for) notes:

"Running Repair Permissions or installing Apple's 10.5.1 OSX update corrupts HP print drivers for specific Photosmart, Officejet and Deskjet products.

    Fixes:

  • Some print driver settings are inaccessible
  • File permissions are set incorrectly
  • Some installed files appear to be 0 bytes.

NOTE: Users who have not yet installed the 10.5.1 update, or who have not run Repair Permissions, should still run the patch installer to prevent possible future issues. "

See the instructions on the Update download page before installing it. (Recommends reinstall of the full 9.7 software after removing existing HP Cups folder.) I've not repaired permissions again since installing the update and am leery of doing so again. I saw this on the C7180 downloads page but from the notes I suspect it applies to other HP inkjet printers also but search HP's software/downloads page for your specific model to see if the update is listed. (Posting as a FYI - if you're not having problems sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone - although I've not seen any problems with the update so far - and again I'm going to avoid repairing permissions for awhile.)
