Apple PowerBook G3 Power Adapter Recall:
Apple has posted a page noting a PowerBook G3 AC Adapter Exchange Program. A clip from that page which has photos of the recalled model (not the Yo-Yo types) notes:

"In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other international safety authorities, Apple is voluntarily recalling certain AC adapters that were sold for use with PowerBook G3 systems shipped from May 1998 until March 2000. Apple has initiated an exchange program and will provide you with a new replacement AC adapter, free of charge.

The affected AC adapters could overheat, posing a fire hazard. Apple received six reports of these adapters overheating. No injuries have been reported. Apple urges you to order a replacement adapter immediately and not to leave your current AC adapter unattended while plugged into any power outlet. ...

The label located on the side of the adapter reads in part, "Macintosh PowerBook 45W AC Adapter" and "Model Number: M4402." "

Note they say no PowerBook G4 or iBook adapters are involved. See the Exchange Program page for more info on how to get the affected adapter's exchanged. (You must enter your Powerbook's serial number for verification. After your Powerbook S/N is verified as shipping with an affected AC adapter, you have to enter the mfr and S/N of the AC adapter.) My PowerBook G3 wallstreet adapter is a M4402.

Comments on Beta Mac OS X Drivers for Wacom Tablets:
A reader post in the forums noted there are beta Wacom graphics tablet drivers in the Toon Boom beta for MacOS X download:

" Toon Boom software contains beta Wacom tablet drivers for OSX. It's actually an app that you put in your applications folder and have to click on to start it, but it does work. (You can find this in the OSX software on your iDisk).

They are definitely beta, with no support for pressure sensitivity or tilt or multibutton pens, etc. BUT I'm happy to have it up and running.

Mapping works properly on my 2 monitor set up. To the extent that I have used it, it also functions properly with classic apps (Photoshop, image browser).

All I really need now is pressure sensitivity. Eventually I would like support for the buttons on my pen (at least double click and/or control click defaults).
(Intuos Wacom tablet, OSX 10.0.4, Photoshop 6.0.1)
I should point out that I'm using a relatively new Wacom USB tablet. Oh, and if anyone knows how to make the tablet driver load at log in, I would appreciate it. "

I bought one of the low-cost Wacom Graphire tablets some months back at a local Sam's club and want to try the drivers with it. Toon Boom beta is listed at Apple's OS X downloads page here. Although the developer's news page noted you "will be able to download Toon Boom Studio beta through June 20, 2001", I was able to download it today after registering at their site. The public beta evaluation key (sent via email ) expires on July 14th, 2001. The full version costs $349 (download version) and $379 (boxed version) according to their web store today, but they noted "MAC versions: 40% Off Until Commercial Release" ($209 and $234 respectively).

Idea for New Sims Game - You're the CEO at Apple:
After reading about another expansion pack planned for "The Sims" (the "Hot Date" pack announced yesterday I had an idea for a new simulation game for Mac fans - a simulation that puts you in charge of Apple.

You'd be in control of new Mac system designs for instance - design new Macs with features you've always wanted and see how the market reacts. Fight for market share with the Dell's, etc., plan and visit new retail store locations, deal with existing major retail store chains, etc. (OK that aspect may be too painful...).
[Note - two readers replied to this post noting there is a web page trying to get a "SimApple" game developed.]

NavCom Cache Control is No More
Was the subject line of this email I received from the program's author. (It was a utility noted here in the past that many readers used.)

" Hello, As you may (or may not) recall, I am the author NavCom Cache Control (a somewhat popular caching utility for Netscape browsers). I am writing to relay a bit of bad news:

Day Job Softwerks, the distributor of NavCom Cache Control, ceased business operations on July 1st, 2001. NavCom Cache Control is no longer being distributed or supported, nor are we accepting any further registration payments.

The Day Job Softwerks web site ( will remain active until September 1st, 2001. For our customers who need registration codes, we have posted a registration code generator at the site. The generator can be accessed directly at:

Since our web site will eventually be going dark, we urge customers to download the HTML source of the generator page. Instructions on how to do so are contained on the page.

We also plan to post an abridged FAQ to address any known technical issues relating to N3C. Until then, the current FAQ page will remain available. It (and the future abridged FAQ) can be found at:
Thanks for your attention and assistance.
