News stories of June 21st, 2002:

Airport 2.04 Update for OS 9, OS X Networking Update 1.0/Airport Updates
Checking OS 9's Software Updates shows an Airport 2.04 Update available. I don't see any info/note at VT or Apple's site yet on this update, but my setup still works fine after the update (using Siemens SpeedStream base station).
A reader also noted that there's an OS X Networking update available and running Software Updates again after that update shows an Airport for OS X update. (Thanks to "Creative One" for the heads-up.)
I rebooted into OS X and here's what's reported in Software Update:

    Networking Update 1.0
This Networking update improves network and internet access after restarting your computer or when waking from sleep.

After the update, run Software Updates again to get the OS X Airport 2.04 update. Here's a clip on what's changed:

    New Features in AirPort 2.0.4
  • The AirPort Setup Assistant configures the base station with America Online (AOL) account information and configures the AOL client with the correct location and AirPort settings.
  • The ability to dial into the base station through a standard PPP phone connection, allowing remote access to the base station and the computers on the AirPort wireless and wired network.
  • Compatible with Windows clients that use Point PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) or IPSec (without authenticated headers) style VPN (Virtual Private Network).
  • Supports multiple connections to port mapped services. "

Reader Comments:
Installed internally on an eMac, and took about an hour to remove the Hitachi CDRW and install the Pioneer DVR-104. Had to set the jumper on the DVR-104 to CS (Cable Select).
Running OS X 10.1.5

Works fine with Toast Titanium 5.1, burnt a DVD and a CD. Then Started up iDVD2 and made a small DVD of some video I had from iMovie. And finally watching DVD movies with DVD player worked fine.
Whoo hoo!"

Report on Firmware Update for Toshiba SD-R1202 DVD/CDRW Drive
(from a reader's drive database report added today)

Reviewer's Name: Jeff
Date Submitted: 6/20/2002
Drive Type: Combo DVD-CDR
Drive Interface: IDE
Drive Brand: Toshiba
Drive Model Number: SD-R1202 (16x10x40x+12x DVD)
Driver Used: Apple Hacked
Mac Model: Apple G4 Dual CPU
Mac OS Version: OS X
Reader Comments:
"This is my second report for this drive.

After reading there was a firmware update on Toshiba's website I flashed my drive in a friend's PC. His computer froze during the process, I'm not sure why. But it completed the process and my drive's firmware is now version 1026, instead of 1020.

With the original firmware (1020) and some hacked drivers (learned from the FAQ portion of this site) I was able to burn audio CD's in iTunes, but burning data CD's on the Finder would freeze the system and disable the drive. I'm happy to say that with the firmware update (1026) and some hacked drivers, data CD's can now be burned! I've burned data CD's in both OS 9 and OS X perfectly.

Side note: I hacked the drivers using a demo of BBEdit. When I modified the OS X version I simply changed the line which said "SD-R1102" to "SD-R1202"... but the driver in OS 9 only seemed to work if I changed the line which said "SD-R2002" to "SD-R1202"

[he later wrote]

For the Toshiba SD-R1202 1026 Firmware update go to:
for a direct link to the update. for technical info is an exe which will tell you if you need the Firmware update or not (PC only), but Apple System Profiler tells the same thing. for semi-helpful instructions.

Cacophony Sound Application for OSX (the Audio equivalent of Graphic Converter)
(from a reader's email)

"Purpose of this note is to alert you of existence of a terrific new shareware sound program called "Cacophony" for OSX available at that may be of interest to you and your readers. In my view, Cacophony does for sound what the outstanding Graphic Converter does for graphics.

I was looking for a program to convert some ".ogg" sound files (an MP3 variant) to something that Toast could recognize in order to burn an audio CD. I found .ogg players for OS9.x and OSX, but nothing that would do the conversion. Cacophony does it quickly and painlessly. This sort of conversion...almost two dozen supported sound just one of many features in Cacophony, but alone is worth the $25 shareware price.
Bill Donnelly "

The author of Cacophony saw the above post and wrote about an update due soon:

Hi Mike,
I noticed one of your users mentioned my new shareware sound editor, Cacophony. Just thought you might like to know that v1.1 will be released in the next few days, hopefully within the next 48 hours.
I'll drop you another mail when it is released.
Update: On Saturday Richard sent a note that the v1.1 update was available:

Cacophony, a sound editor for Mac OS X, has been updated to v1.1.

* Fixed crash on quit when more than one file was open.
* Fixed problem causing all 'shlb' files to have the Cacophony Library icon.
* Fixed a number of small memory leaks when closing a window.
* Fixed some visual glitches that occurred after resizing a window.
* Fixed a bug allowing the window to be made too small for all the channels to fit.
* Fixed bug causing the effect menu to be dimmed after pasting in a sound.
* Added the ability to choose which sound channels play from each speaker.
* Added the ability to stop opening a file.
* Added Last Effect command to the Effects menu.
* Added the ability to use the arrow keys to adjust the current selection slightly.
* Moved a large number of strings from the code into the resource fork in order to make localisation easier.
* Increased the number of supported channels to 16.
* Tweaked the positioning of new sound windows slightly.
* Added icon for saved files. Cacophony now uses a valid type and creator for the files it saves, allowing other programs (for example iMovie) to open them. "

If/when any readers do upgrade their Pismo with either the PL or Newer Tech version, please send an email via the news link about and also post a report in the Rate Your CPU Upgrade database. Thanks!
