"
Radeon Enabler 1.1 has been released.
This new version incorporates major changes to enable support for ATI Radeon Mobility, and eMac Radeon onboard graphics chipsets.
Radeon Enabler (1.1) supports the following graphics chipsets (new support is listed in bold):
- OEM Radeon 9800 Pro
- OEM Radeon 9700 Pro
- OEM Radeon 9600 Pro
- OEM Radeon 9000 Pro
- Prototype Retail Radeon 9800 Pro Special Edition (ATY,Elan)
- OEM Radeon 8500 (was an Xserve option)
- OEM Radeon 7500
- eMac Radeon 9200 graphics
- eMac Radeon 7500 graphics
- Radeon 9700 Mobility (Powerbook)
- Radeon 9600 Mobility (Powerbook)
- Radeon 9200 Mobility (iBook)
- Radeon 9000 Mobility (Powerbook)
- Radeon 7500 Mobility (Powerbook/iBook)
- Radeon Mobility (Powerbook)
Additional enhancements include:
- Improved support for the OEM Radeon 9000 Pro to work around an
issue with dual-monitor support. The OEM 9000 Pro now works correctly when monitors are connected to both graphics connectors.
- Overall improvement in dual-monitor and multi graphics cards
configurations for all chipsets
IMPORTANT
If you have already used a previous version of Radeon Enabler, you must
reinstall the ATI Radeon Displays package before you can use a newer version of Radeon Enabler. Radeon Enabler will only recognize an original, unpatched installation.
For more information and to download Radeon Enabler, visit the Radeon
Enabler website at
http://www.radeonenabler.com" Thanks to Bruce for his continuing work on this.
I welcome feedback from users of Radeon Enabler 1.1 (especially Mobility chip users and eMac owners).

Giga Designs announces G4 1.5GHz Cube CPU Upgrade |
Giga Designs has a press release on their new G4 (7457) 1.5GHz CPU upgrade for the G4 Cube. List price is $599. There's also a 1.4GHz version ($499) available. The page has this note on OS support:
"OS X 10.2.8 or later required for installation. OS 9.2.2 and OS X dual boot configuration compatible. While this upgrade is OS 9 compliant, Giga Designs does not warrant or support 3rd party software operation under OS 9."
(PL's 7457 CPU upgrades included a system firmware patch.) I reviewed Giga Designs' previous 7455A G4/1-1.2GHz Cube upgrade earlier this year.
Update: I wrote John Highhouse of Waypoint (Giga's partner now) for clarification on OS 9 support:
"
Hi Mike,
This board will work on OS 9 in a dual boot scenario only. The user must
have OS X to update the firmware so that their cube will recognize the
7457 processor. We do have an nvram patch that allows the system to
operate on an OS 9 partition on the drive.
We have not tested, nor do we support any application software running
in OS 9. This doesn't mean that the 3rd party software won't work in OS
9, it just means that we don't guarantee it to work under OS 9.
Basically we are concentrating on OS X and the application software that
is supported by this OS.
As with any Giga Designs product, the customer has 30 days to return the
board for a refund. This is subject to reseller conditions and policies.
We recommend the customer to check the reseller return policies before
purchasing any product...
John Highhouse
WayPoint Distribution Inc.
(Since to date I've not seen any 1.5GHz rated G4s, I asked
what the chip rating was)
This is a 1.33GHz 7457 processor that we have tested and guaranteed to
operate consistently at 1.5GHz.

Transintl's Swift200 3-Drive Internal G5 Kit |
I'm late posting this but Transintl recently issued a PR newswire press release on their Swift 200 internal 3 drive bracket/SATA controller(s) kit for G5 Towers. (I've asked them to correct some typos on that page info - such as RAID 1 is mirror mode and RAID 0 is stripe (fastest) mode.)
The Swift200 allows running internal RAID arrays with up to 5 drives if using both the standard 2 internal bay drives, although most will leave one of the standard internal drives as a non-RAID boot disc. (With Hitachi's 400GB drives, you have have up to 2TB of internal disk storage.) See the linked page for kit pricing and drive pricing.
Performance with 4 Hitachi 250GB drives was very good - 200MB/sec+ (start/outer area) to appx 115MB/sec (end/inner area) of a 4 Drive RAID 0 array. The only downside I've seen in testing is that it makes the G5's fans spin up faster. (The G5 fans will spin up regardless when stressing the CPU but even running a single app (even a Browser often times) from the boot drive/onboard SATA causes the G5 fans to spin up faster here. ) I also tried removing one of the drives in the center - which still didn't change the behavior of the fans. A reader said a Blackmagic card owner noted the same thing happened with his G5 which was due to a bad fan sensor, but I've not determined that is a factor in my G5 system.
The Swift200 drives seem to run cooler than the stock drive bay installed drives however, and the actual G5 CPU temperatures don't really seem to be significantly affected by the presence of the Swift200. (The G5 temp sensors monitor adjacent area temperature, not the actual CPU temperatures, but reporting utils didn't show any significant temperature rise from the Swift200 and the drives never got nearly as hot as the upper bay drives.)
If any owners of the Swift200 that are using it for pro video work can comment on G5 fan behavior - let me know.

Intego launches ChatBarrier X3 |
Intego sent an email press release on the launch of ChatBarrier X3, a program that works with Apple's iChat instant messaging software to provide two-way, real-time encryption of text chats. However visiting their site this morning (no links/product page link in their PR email) I didn't see any product page for it there. (I wrote them about this so hopefully they'll have something there by the time you read this.)

- IDE Western Digital WD2500JBRTL 250GB in Dual G4 (OS X 10.3)
(2002 quicksilver with native big drive support)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
