(Download pages linked)

Here's a link to the specific doc About the security content of these updates.
(About Doc links in the DL pages are working now but have basically the same info.)

2011 MacBook Pro/10.7.4 user warns about KP's after ThunderBolt 1.2 Update
A reader sent a warning about problems (KP's at boot) with 2011 MacBook Pros (OS X 10.7.4) after installing yesterday's Thunderbolt Update 1.2. (Said to add support for the new ThunderBolt to Ethernet adapter):

"Thunderbolt Software update is hosing 2011 Macbook Pro's
There are lots and lots of reports of the new Thunderbolt Software update completely hosing OS 10.7.4 on 2011 Macbook Pro's.
Happened to me - twice. Updated, couldn't boot.
Booted from clone and re-cloned, tried it again, kernel panic every time.
Apple discussion boards are full of these reports.
-Jim W."

Thanks Jim. (I had already added his warning below yesterday's news item on the update.)
Of course those 2011 (and non-Retina 2012) MacBook Pros have built-in Ethernet and don't require an Adapter, but often times we think updates may have other fixes/improvements than just what apple lists for the update and install them just to be 'up to date'.
(Update: On June 15th Apple posted a TS doc about this problem and *pulled the TBolt 1.2 update*. They said "Apple is investigating this issue and plans to release a new version of Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2 soon.")

Update 2: Late June 18th Apple posted Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2.1. Although v1.2.1 is supposed to fix the above problems - if you do not have a need for the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter (the purpose of the software update) I would not install this update. (And even if I did need the adapter, I'd wait for some feedback from early adopters first - watching apple's forums for reports.)

Sleep Not Supported w/ThunderBolt to Ethernet Adapter on 2011 Minis:
While on the subject of the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and 2011 Macs, here's a new Apple support doc out today. (Not sure if other models may have the same issue.)

"(Mid 2011) Mac mini and mini Server: Does not go to sleep when Thunderbolt to Ethernet Gigabit Adapter is connected

Products Affected:
Mac mini (Mid 2011), Mac mini Server (Mid 2011)

Symptoms:
When a Thunderbolt to Ethernet Gigabit Adapter is connected to a Mac mini (Mid 2011) or Mac mini Server (Mid 2011), the Mac mini will not go to sleep. It cycles rapidly between sleep and wake.

Resolution:
Do not put the Mac mini to sleep while the Thunderbolt to Ethernet Gigabit Adapter is connected. Disconnect the adapter before putting the computer to sleep.

When using a Thunderbolt to Ethernet Gigabit Adapter with a Mac mini (Mid 2011) or Mac mini Server (Mid 2011), set Computer Sleep to "Never" in the Energy Saver System Preferences pane. This is the default setting on a Mac mini Server."

BTW: As noted in an update above, Apple later pulled the original Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2 that added support for this adapter and posted an article on boot problems with some 2011 Macs after installing the T'Bolt 1.2 software update that included the same Mini models they list in the above doc on sleep not working. (The doc on boot problems w/TB 1.2 update also listed other 2011 models including some iMacs, Macbook Airs and MacBook Pros.)

  • Enhancements for the MacBook Pro with Retina display
