M-Audio Updated Drivers for Firewire and USB devices (w/Beta Intel versions)
" I've seen occasional reports/questions on your site about the M-Audio products. (reports pages for USB Transit, Revolution 7.1 and 5.1 PCI cards on the Audio topics page.) They've updated their drivers for the Audiophile and the 410 to version 1.7, certified to work with OS X 10.4.5.

Installed the Audiophile version last night with no problems--the updater installs new software and new firmware for the Audiophile.
The update I mentioned was for PPC Macs--they also have new beta drivers for Intel Macs.
-Jamie H. "

Another reader mentioned a driver and firmware update for the Firewire 1814:

" i also found that they posted new drivers for the Firewire 1814. After installing the new driver i rebooted, and it popped up a small window saying that it was updating the firmware on the 1814.
-Adam S. "

The drivers page also lists Mar. 21st updated drivers for the Keystation 49 (v3.2.2), USB Audiophile (1.6.2) and USB Transit (1.6.3) along with Intel versions and a Beta driver feedback form link. (Note: Also see M-Audio's comments on updated drivers/software for Intel Macs in Friday's news.)
If readers that reported problems with the USB Transit in the past here find the v1.6.3 update helps, let me know. Thanks.

Any Intel CPU Mac owners try Windows XP on External Drive?
So far I've only had reports on installing Windows XP on Intel CPU Macs (using the boot loader) on the internal drive but I've had a few readers ask if anyone had tried installing/running Windows XP on an external drive. (Note - windows XP reportedly can't boot from a FW drive, not sure about USB 2.0.) If anyone has tried this let me know. Thanks.
Update - a reader replied:

"...I have tried, as only having 80GB in the first place means I need all that space!

I partitioned a 25GB (250GB?) HD into half for OS X & half for XP. I installed the bare minimum OS X stuff on that partition.

My stock mini duo booted 10.4.5 from the external HD both via Firewire & USB (haven't seen a pc that will *boot* from firewire!), so I arrowed down to the "select windows icon" & it read the XP cd from the internal DVD drive, but the XP setup screen only sees the internal HD :-(
(I asked him if he tried this when booting from USB, not just Firewire.-Mike)

I read a snippet yesterday, suggesting SuperDuper may do it. (I think he means clone an internal drive that has OS X and Windows XP already installed.-Mike) I may try that & of course will let you know.
HTH, John
PS. I tried Q emulator too, but XP just fails to install about half way through. The Q site mentions that very error & they're working on it. "

I mentioned to John that Tuesday's news had a Guide to Running Windows XP under free 'Q' emulator by an Intel CPU Mac owner.
If anyone tries cloning an OS X/Win XP internal drive to an External (i.e. USB 2.0), let me know if that works.

CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 1 new and 1 updated report added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.)
The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,653 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-110D in G5 tower (OS X 10.4)
(Updated report from March 6th to add notes on DL disc burns)
  • IDE Sony DRU-820A in (MDD) Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.4)
    (Also lists DVD-RAM as supported.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
