| Some iPhone owners report camera problems (updated with tip from Apple Genius) |
(see below for a tip/suggestion, although Don replied that did not help him)
Posting by reader request - I'm not seeing this problem here with iPhone 1.1.3 or 1.1.4. )
"It appears some are having problems with their iPhone cameras. The phone will perform as normal when taking a picture, with the exception of actually recording it. Some have gotten new phones, some have restored and it works, only to have it fail again.
some are blaming this on the update 1.1.4.
But one owner (of multiple iPhones) has had the problem since vers 1.1.3. And claims Apple has removed his posts.
This might be worth looking into, I have reset with no luck on my iPhone. (bought on the first day, never hacked) Here is the link (and attaching a pdf if it should disappear) -Don

Not seeing the problem here but I wonder if there is any apple update that is trouble-free for everyone. I've had no problems taking/importing photos (into iPhoto 08, etc.) from my iPhone w/1.1.3 or the current 1.1.4 update - photos are stored on iPhone and import into iPhoto OK (using AL imac w/10.5.2 and all updates) This is a unmodified iPhone that originally had 1.1.2 firmware on it IIRC - never modded in any way. (I was given a 4GB iPhone that was totally bricked by the 1.1.2 update (IIRC it was 1.1.2 - last fall) - Apple store locally confirmed it was bricked and offered to replace it but had no 4GB models in stock so I paid $100 to get the 8GB model.
I wonder if this could be a hardware failure (rare I know but a certain % of anything will fail - although Don noted some with the problem restored and had it work for awhile).
Update: Within minutes of posting this I had this reply from an Apple "Genius" with a suggested fix:
"Hi Mike, I'm a Apple tech (Genius), I've seen a few of such issue and can easily be fixed. I'm yet to find an iPhone with these symptoms to be hardware related. The fix is to "erase all contents and settings". For readers who are not familiar on how to do this, on the iPhone go to settings/General/Reset/Erase all Contents and Settings. This will erase all user settings and contents so sync first before doing so. (Restoring will do the same but this is faster than restoring). This will fix the issue.
If the iPhone continues to have the same issue after a backup restore is performed, the backup may be corrupted and the person needs to start fresh without restoring from previous backups.
He should try to take a picture after performing the erase all contents and settings without restoring his info on the phone. Like I said, many times this failure is due to a corrupt backup. Similar issue (corrupt user data) occurs when the camera or photos app wont launch. Same fix.
(name withheld by request)"
If his suggestion helps anyone with this problem let me know.
I sent Don a note to ask he try this - he replied he had w/o any luck.
"
Yep, tried that, also the Power/Home button combo. Also tried full restore from iTunes, no luck. I have to go out for a while (work calls) but will try a full restore as new phone later tonight. -Don" |

| Some 8800GT owners running COD2 and NWN2 OK |
| Reply to recent posts from 8800GT/Call of Duty 2 and NeverWinter Nights 2 owners on problems running those games - here's a couple 8800GT owners that say they're not seeing those problems:
"
It appears that these compatibility issues with the 8800GT card and some of the Mac games aren't "across the board" problems.
I have a copy of Call of Duty 2 installed on my Mac Pro and in fact, it was the first game I tried out after upgrading my video card to an 8800GT. It played just fine for me.
(I'm running version 1.3 of the game, and for whatever it might be worth, I'm also using somebody's "no DVD" patch to keep it from forcing me to place the original disc in the drive before the game will run.)
-Tom"
Few problems are universal it seems... For those that saw problems I wonder if they tried trashing the game prefs/config files. Also despite the report on NeverWinter Nights 2/8800GT problems (which had a note from Aspyr support that it was an issue) I had a single CPU Mac Pro/8800GT owner say he ran the game fine:
"Just wanted to respond to the NWN2 issue with the 8800GT. I ordered my MacPro (single quad-core 2.8 GHz) with the 8800GT pre-installed and have had no problems with playing NWN2. I did install all of the Apple updates prior to installing any apps. NWN2 even works with my FireWave which Prey, Doom 3, and Quake 4 will not recognize. I'm not sure what makes my system compatible and others not, but just thought you might want to know.
(I asked if he had any game updates/patches/mods, etc. installed)
No, I haven't applied any updates to NWN2. I am running the version from the DVD with no updates, add-ons, or hak-paks. The only glitches I've noticed is that on rare occasions the cut-scene audio does not play and twice the camera has gotten stuck on rotating. Restarting the app has fixed these problems every time.
I just recalled one other thing. I initially installed NWN2 in a games folder inside my Applications folder and it would not work. Installing it in the root level of the Applications folder fixed the problem. -Bill"
Yesterday's news had a post from a 8800GT owner on Star Wars: Empire at War issues with v1.05a patch (graphics corruption in menus) but said reverting to the original installed version solved that.
