GarageBand 1.1 Update
Appears in Software Update this afternoon. Here's the info from the SU panel on the 37.2MB update:

" GarageBand 1.1 addresses isolated performance and stability issues, allows per-track Echo settings similar to other effects, supports loop libraries in other disk locations, supports importing unprotected AAC audio files in addition to AIF and MP3 files, and addresses issues with ReWire support, moving GarageBand songs between different computers, Help support, fixing the timing of individual notes (as well as entire regions), and dragging entire tracks in the timeline "

Apple's GarageBand page didn't have the v1.1 update listed when I posted this (still showing the prev. 1.0.1 update), but should soon.

Safari/Help Runscript Vulnerability
(Update: See Friday's news page for Apple's 2004-05-24 Security update which addresses this specific issue, but also see the notes/links there on other demos of vulnerabilities and suggested workarounds.)

From a reader mail:

" Hello, you might be interested by this:
http://www.insecure.ws/article.php?story=2004051612423136
This explains a new exploit for Safari which is quite dangerous and in the line of Microsoft's Explorer exploits. It allows remote code execution (the demo writes and open a little text file as example, in textedit) because of a proprietary HTML extension Apple made available for it's HelpViewer. Quite interesting. "

They suggest disabling the opening of 'safe' files in Safari prefs and change the Help helper in Internet Config. (? I can' t find Internet Config in OS X...). Another reader replied:

"Please suggest to everyone to either burn a copy of the Help Viewer application in System/Library/CoreServices and delete the original or use permissions to set user to "username" NO ACCESS for all.
This prevents the exploit from running, record the original permissions settings. This defiantly works, the "Open Safe files.." gives only limited protection (as the article mentioned), other browsers have reported the exploit works.
Help Viewer application is the linchpin.
Best regards, G."

On Tuesday, MU listed a 3rd party "fix" but I've not personally tested it:

"(from http://isophonic.net/ source site)

Don't Go There, GURLfriend 1.0
18 May 2004
We've just released Don't Go There, GURLfriend! 1.0 . DGTGF is an application you can use to patch away the OS X exploit found at http://bronosky.com/pub/AppleScript.htm quickly and efortlessly."

Many (understandably) are leery of running this sort of thing however.
A MU reader posted another suggestion (similar to what was suggested yesterday as a better option that just disabling opening 'safe' files) - remapping the Help association using More Internet prefs pane to use a text editor instead.

B&W G3 Owner Tip/Fix for Slow iPod Mini Transfers
Friday's news page had a B&W G3 owner (w/G4/500 CPU upgrade) that mentioned very slow transfers with his iPod Mini, but not his 10GB iPod. (He blamed iTunes 4.5, but other B&W G3 owners had also reported this problem in Apple's forums).
I mentioned a common fix for B&W G3 firewire problems in the past was using a PCI FW card and asked for other B&W G3/iPod Mini feedback. A B&W G3 owner w/iPod Mini wrote that a PCI Firewire card did solve the problem:

" Just to let you folks know, my rev A B&W has crappy performance on my (iPod) mini when plugged into the built-in FW ports, but performs normally when plugged into the ports on my $20 OWC PCI FW 400 card. I think you hit it square when you said it's the LB FW ports on the B&W's
Geoffrey M.
(although any OHCI compliant FW card should work, I asked if the card he was using was this $17.95 4-port model at OWC.)
that's the one, works like champ. "

The original OWC site specials link no longer worked as of August 2004, but here's a similar one ($19.95).
Also as a follow-up, here's a copy of a report on Aug. 18th, 2004 that the same slow performance affects the 4G iPod (click wheel) and he also used a low-cost ($9.95 2-port) FW card from OWC:
(clip from 8/18/2004 news page)
Another B&W G3 owner recently wrote his 4G iPod (new Click Wheel model) also had very slow transfers using the onboard FW ports and much better performance using a PCI Firewire card.

" Hey Mike, I have a 350 MHZ Rev A Blue and White G3 (with 500/600MHZ Daystar G4 upgrade). I have three iPods (don't ask):

1. 10GB third generation
2. iPod mini
3. 40GB fourth generation

The 10 GB third generation works just fine with the Blue & White's built-in firewire ports.
However, the iPod mini and the 40GB fourth generation do not work properly with the Blue & White's built-in firewire ports. Transferring songs to either of those iPods takes FOREVER (like 10 minutes to transfer one album).

Apparently, beginning with the mini iPod, iPods are no longer fully compatible with Blue and White built-in firewire ports (even though the min requirements for those iPods is listed as *any* MAC with built-in firewire ports) due to some hardware or software issue.

Workaround: PCI firewire card. I used the following $9.95 2 port firewire PCI card from OWC and transfers go lightning fast. Any other (OHCI compliant) firewire PCI card likely would accomplish the same. It's pathetic to have to waste a PCI slot on this though.
Apple is aware of this problem, at least with the mini. I corresponded with Steve Anderson at Apple about it. I wish Apple would fix this compatibility issue or stop with the misleading advertising.
David G. "

Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 3 new reports this morning (entries from Friday-Sunday, entries today are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 9,369. Here's a summary of the reports added today (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):

  • Apple G4/867 (QS) module in (Digital Audio) G4/AGP (rated 10)
    (requires 12v mod)
  • Giga Designs Dual G4/1.3GHz in (Sawtooth) G4/AGP (rated 9)
  • Other World Computing G4/533 in Beige G3 (rated 10)

(My reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades w/apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked on the CPU upgrades page. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 16 new reports added (reader entries from Friday-Sunday midnight ET, entries today are added the next newsday morning. Entries with no comments are not posted). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 12,358 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first)

    CDRW Drives:
  • IDE Liteon LTR-52327S (52x32x52x) in Beige G3 (OS X)
(native burn support in 10.2.8 and later, FAQ has burn support files for older OS's)
  • IDE Teac CD-W516EB (16x/10x/40x) in Beige G3 (OS X)
  • IDE "52xMax" (assuming it's a Memorex 52MAXX) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
(listed under "other" brands. He didn't realize that 10.3.x does not use the same burn support files that 10.1.x/10.2.x did - so previous modified burn support files won't work in 10.3.x. Suggested he try Patchburn II for 10.3.x, but he also noted toast problems in 10.3. with the drive)

    Combo DVD-CDR Drives:
  • Exp. Bay Matshita 8x8x24x + 4x DVD-ROM (didn't note drive model) in Powerbook G3 2000 (OS X 10.3) (using Patchburn II for Panther. Systems page, Powerbook section has 2001 article on Exp. bay combo drive swaps for Pismos, etc.)
  • IDE Liteon SOHC-5232K (didn't note speed rating) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
(no native burn support, so used lacie profile - linked here on the patchburn II page. Said drive prevented system sleep - odd...)

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • Firewire TDK DED+440 (4x DVD+/-R) used w/Dual G4 (OS X 10.3)
(no native iapps burn support, suggested trying Patchburn II for Panther.)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-107U (actually DVR-107D) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-107D in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-107 in Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.3)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-107 in Dual G4 (OS X 10.3)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-107 in B&W G3 (OS X 9.2)
(FAQ's DVD section has OS 9.x burn support file for this drive. he noted buffer underruns in Toast.)
  • IDE Sony DRU-700A (Dual Layer) in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
(no native iapps burn support, so using Patchburn II for Panther.)
(Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT and B&W G3 Macs)

    Hard Drives:
  • Firewire Lacie d2 250GB used w/Single G4 DDR (OS X 10.3)
  • IDE (serial ATA onboard) Western Digital 74GB Raptor (10,000 RPM) in G5 Tower (OS X 10.3)
  • IDE (serial ATA on board) Western Digital 74GB Raptor in G5 Tower (OS X 10.3)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
