| Notes on Pioneer K04L supporting DL Projects in iDVD 5.0.1 |
I've posted notes on problems with some Dual-Layer compatible DVD burners (like NEC 3xxx, Pioneer DVR-108/109s, etc.) although showing "+R DL" support in Tiger's Apple System Profiler, the option to change the Project size to 8GB (in the Project Info menu) with iDVD 5.0.1 wasn't shown. (See posts in last Thursday's and Monday's news pages.)
Recently I've gotten 2 reports that the Pioneer DVR-K04L notebook drive (also popular for Mini use) does show the 8GB project size option. (As mentioned here in drive database reports and the Mac Mini page (see this older Mac Mini page post here), the K04L (regardless of source) has native burn support - reported as "Apple Supported/Shipped" in 10.3.7 and later at least, (no patchburn needed).
Here's a screenshot a reader sent (thanks William) showing the project size option in iDVD 5.0.1 for supported drives (perhaps only those that are reported as "apple supported/shipped" since the media option doesn't appear for other DL drives that are listed as "vendor supported", etc. even though they have iApps burn support otherwise.)
Note: For those that missed the reports earlier this year (in the drive database) - some Powerbook G4 owners reported that earlier bought DVR-K04L drives (from MCE, OWC, etc.) were not recognized in some models (firmware set to Slave mode, which is normal for Mac Mini models or Cubes with one IDE bus, but PB G4s have a separate optical drive bus and are normally set to Master).
Not all PowerBook G4 owners reported a problem with slave set drives though (but several did) and there was at least one report in the database here on mtg screw tension causing drive problems (drive not recognized or a corrupted drive ID depending on screw tension), so I'm not sure if that was a factor in the other problem reports.
Just a FYI if you're buying a K04L for a PowerBook G4 (vs a Mini, Cube or other mac with only one IDE bus) you might want to check with the dealer first. (OWC stopped selling the DVR-K04L drive as powerbook G4 compatible after the initial problem reports.) And BTW - Mac parts dealers have K04Ls without a bezel attached as Minis, Cubes, PowerBook G4s, etc.. don't use drives with a bezel attached, but for use with a system that needs one (like for PB G3 Exp. bay use), PC parts dealers like Mwave usually sell drives with a bezel attached. (Although often there are bezel mods needed to fit in the expansion bay housing.)

| Entourage Attachment corruption with Tiger |
Last night Jamie sent a note about problems with attachments being corrupted using Entourage (from Office 2004 he said) after upgrading to Tiger. I asked if he had any 3rd party addons for Entourage installed and he said no, and was using the latest update for Office 2004. (He later noted the problem was sending corrupted attachments - he sent me 2 JPGs as a test. One of the 2 were corrupted when received here in Entourage X (not 2004) running 10.3.9.) He also sent links to other reports on this at Apple's forums and a mac office usenet thread.
I use Entourage X (from original Office X, not 2004 version) but it's on a powerbook running 10.3.9 (not updated to Tiger on that system yet). If anyone knows if this issue affects Entourage X let me know.
Update Of course after posting this I've gotten several mails from Entourage 2004 users running Tiger saying they've seen no problems with attachments (mentioning JPGs, PDFs, etc.) - so not sure what is the cause of those with the problems. (Jamie said he was running the latest Office X 2004 updates and I'm sure he had Entourage set to fully download attachments.) If anyone finds out what is the cause, let me know.

| MDD internal Modem user Notes/Tip on Tiger dial-up problem |
| Although most modem users didn't report a problem with Tiger, some did. Here's a mail from a MDD owner that did see a problem and how he solved it:
"Mike,
I have a similar configuration to others who have had the modem problem
(MDD, v.92 internal), dial-up *was* working fine until the modem-on-hold
thing got used and then it started with the "could not open..." message. I
did some quick voodoo (reset nvram in open firmware, new location, etc.) and
then tried out the internal v.90 modem that I had laying around from an
older machine and am online with that. (I asked for more info on the
v.90 modem-Mike)
I'm pretty sure all G4 Mac modems are compatible, at least the v.92 modem
that came with the MDD, a v.90 modem from a GigE and a Stealth Serial
adapter all work in the various G4s that I've tried them in.
I'll try the v.92 again in a bit and
see if its time out has made it see things my way. I did just install 10.4.1
but since they didn't address anything modem related that probably doesn't
mean anything. (he later wrote) It didn't resolve itself a few hours later. I then tried it in the GigE with the same hard drive and got the same results. Then I grabbed the disk that
I'd tried 10.4 out on to make sure the modem didn't have any problems on my
system (and it didn't, then) and that failed now too. (I asked if he still had the
v.92 modem installs to send a clip of the details on it from Apple System Profiler-Mike)
I'd suggest disabling the online call notification thing for
dial-up users with the suspect configuration in the meantime.

"
If any readers with Tiger modem problems find that helps (or the tip in the report below), let me know. Thanks. (Note - one reader later said to also check the Modem settings/country setting.)
Another reader mentioned a tip he used in Panther for a modem problem:
"My modem works fine on Tiger. (I asked what mac model/modem he was using-Mike)
I do know that there was an issue on Panther that caused my Mac to
freeze when trying to connect via the modem. I solved this problem by
deleting /var/log/ppp.log. To access this from the Finder, select the
Go menu > Go to folder and enter in /var/log/ then press return. Find
ppp.log, move it to the trash (you'll be asked for your administrator
password) and empty the trash. After that, try connecting again.
It worked for me; maybe it'll work for others.

I'd tend to doubt that will help since I think some users with a modem problem even tried a Tiger clean install (erase and install).

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,696 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.
CDRW Drives:
- USB Iomega CDDVD482416E (48x24x48) used w/iMac (OS X 10.3)
(Using Patchburn 3 for iApps burn support.)
Hard Drives:
- IDE Serial ATA PCI card connected Seagate 200GB in (MDD) Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.3) (problems noted with controller card)
- IDE Seagate ST3300831A 300GB in iMac G4 (OS X 10.4)
(iMac G4 has native big drive support. Used iMac G4 15in take-apart article here)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
