DVR-108 Owner report on burning Dual Layer disk in 10.3.6 Disk Utility
The other day I asked for DL burner reports after posting the Apple DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2 update info which mentioned Dual Layer burn support with 10.3.6. (I don't have any Dual Layer DVD+R discs to try in 10.3.6 and to be honest, at $10 each best price here, I'm not going to be buying any until the price comes down.) A Pioneer DVR-108 owner (no native 10.3.6 burn support so using Patchburn 3 I assume) said he burned a DL DVD+R disc using Disk Utility in 10.3.6.

" ...Regarding double layer burning, I realize it is only mentioned in the DSP (DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2) kb article but I believe double layer burning support was added to the DiscRecording framework in general (see its higher version: drutil version, than 10.3.5).
To verify that I burned to a R8 with Disk Utility without problem (7.56GB image), iTunes and iPhoto also seem to recognize the blank media properly as well as the drutil command line tool ('drutil info' on a DVD+R DL capable drive). "

If any DVR-108 (or other DL burner equipped 10.3.6 user) tries DL burning in other iApps, let me know. I'm guessing iDVD still doesn't support it (didn't even support single layer DVD+R media in the past, as of v4.0x at least).
And for owners of other DL drives that don't set the booktype of burned DL discs to "0000h" (DVD-ROM), 10.3.6 has added media/read support for those discs also a reader said.

Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.0.1 Update
If you're running Virtual PC v7, Microsoft today posted a Virtual PC 7.0.1 Update:

" This update is recommended for all users who are using Virtual PC for Mac Version 7.0. This update improves overall stability of Virtual PC and other issues affecting customers who are running Virtual PC on Power Mac G5 computers with more than 2 GB of memory."

If any readers are running VPC 7 on a G5, let me know what your impressions are of it (I used VPC v2 through 5 at times on G3 and G4 Powerbooks, but never bought v7 as I rarely used it. Emulation always seemed so slow/sluggish compared to a real PC.)

Microsoft AutoUpdate for Office 2004
I don't own Office 2004 but Microsoft today posted a AutoUpdate for Mac Office 2004

" This update to Microsoft AutoUpdate for Office 2004 for Mac is part of Microsoft's continued effort to provide the latest product updates to customers.
Applies to: Office 2004 for Mac, Word 2004, Excel 2004, and PowerPoint 2004."

No autoupdater there for Office v.X (but not sure I'd install one anyway).

Micromat's Podlock (disk/file utility for iPod)
Micromat sent a press release this morning on PodLock disk and file utility for the iPod. (I thought that name rung a bell and searching found two news items back in September when a reader spotted it at a japanese website.)

OEM ATI Radeon 9600 AGP Cards (already modified for 4x AGP G4s)
For 4x AGP mac owners that wanted an OEM 9600 but didn't want to do the mod themselves (see this mod article linked in the FAQ), OWC sent word they have already modified OEM 9600 cards available:

"Radeon 9600s for 4x AGP G4s
In addition to offering these cards for the G5 at $99, we now are offering them modified and prepped for the PowerMac G4 4X AGP Slot models for a price of $119.00. While customers could of course do the modification themselves, for the extra $20 - you get a 1yr Warranty on a no worries card that is all tested and ready to go.
Best Regards,
Lawrence R. O'Connor
Other World Computing"

Although reports earlier this year when the mod was first posted were from MDD and Quicksilver owners, a report in yesterday's news from a Digital Audio G4 tower owner (also 4x AGP) said the modified card worked in that system also. (As expected but good to get verification.)
(I'm going to be out for several hours today and to those that sent mails on 10.3.6 in the last 24hrs, I'll try to get to them as soon as I can. thanks.)

Intech replies to the 10.3.6/Speedtools Device Tuner Problem (iPod not mounting)
Here's Intech's reply on the iPod Firewire mounting problem mentioned in yesterday's news if Speedtools' device tuner (current version as of 11/8/2004) is installed. (First noted in a report on the OS X 10.3.6 Update Feedback page)

(from a mail yesterday afternoon)
"Hi Mike
Regarding today's news about the new 10.3.6 OS release and our Device Tuner, we have discovered this issue as well. For the record, this is an iPod compatibility issue, exclusively. In MacOS X 10.3.6, Apple introduced several new iPod drivers (FYI: this iPod driver change is undocumented in the release notes). The new iPod drivers load in a completely different place then before. They are now much lower in the driver stack and now are next to Apple's other FireWire disk drivers. In theory, this shouldn't have been a problem. The issue is that the new iPod drivers don't provide the same capability level as all of Apple's other FireWire disk drivers and will not load on top of our driver. As a result, Intech will produce a new version of our Device Tuner driver which specifically does not match for iPod devices. Furthermore, Intech provide it free of charge to both OEM and Retail SpeedTools owners alike sometime during the day tomorrow. SpeedTools owners who don't need Device Tuner can easily disable the Device Tuner component (and its associated drivers) using the SpeedTools Installer program, which allows for individual component removal.

Thanks for suggesting to your readers to keep an eye on our website. The good news is that the SpeedTools Utilities Manager will automatically inform users of the new update as soon as it becomes available without them even needing to visit our site.
Best regards,
Christopher P. Karr

There's also been some reports on Firewire drive mounting problems with 10.3.6 and one of the reports on the OS X 10.3.6 Update Feedback page also included a note about an Oxford922/FW800 firmware issue. (My portable FW400 oxford911 drive is fine in 10.3.6 so far.)

FireFox 1.0
MU lists Firefox 1.0, the latest update to the popular browser. (Previous 1.0's were release candidate versions.) Their reader comments there link to a G5 optimized version also but I've not tried it personally. (I'm sticking with the official release versions.)

Here's a summary of the reports added today (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):

  • Sonnet G4/1GHz in (DA) G4/AGP (no rating given due to problems, asked to check if the module was fully seated)

(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the CPU upgrades page. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand). CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 7 new reports added this morning. (Entries from Monday, entries today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total 13,846 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • IDE Acer (BenQ) DW 1620 in G4/AGP (OS X)
(no 10.2.x iApps burn support, so using toast 5.)
  • IDE Iomega Super DVD 12x in G4/AGP (OS X 10.3)
(using Patchburn 3 for iApps burn support. Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT and B&W G3 Macs)
  • IDE NEC ND-2510A in Dual G4 (OS X 10.3)
(using patchburn3 for iapps burn support)

(using patchburn3 for iapps burn support)

    DVD-ROM Drives:

(not bootable from cd he said, even after doing master setting change)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE Seagate ST3200822A 200GB in G4 Cube (OS 9.2)
(no native big drive support, so limited to appx 128GB formatted capacity. see FAQ for options to add 48bit addressing/big drive support)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
