Improvements in Toast 5.2 Update: |
(Update - the email I received noted a 10/2 release, but the 5.2 updater is now available at VT, Macupdate or this direct download link from roxio.) The Toast 5.2 update (first slated for 10/2, but then released early) should have the following changes/improvements:
NEW:
- CD-TEXT (now an available option for MMC-3 compliant recorders that support CD-TEXT):
- Writes CD TEXT (reads track information from Internet music database or from ID3 tags)
- Reads CD TEXT from audio CDs containing pre-recorded information
- Adds CD TEXT information automatically during audio CD disc copy
- Mac OS 10.2.x support
IMPROVED:
- VideoCD - improved encoding performance for all systems
- Optimization for multi-processor systems (up to 2x speed increase)
- More accurate preservation of color detail
- Enhanced Quartz text rendering throughout user interface.
- Improved usability of "Record" speed selection list
- Support for up to 52x recorders
- Support for Yamaha CRW-F1 recorder (upgrade from Toast Lite version bundled with recorder)

Dual G4/867 Owner Overclocking Report |
"
...I previously owned a QS867 that I attempted to OC and it was very
flaky. I kept losing the L3 cache like everyone else did, so after a
few hours I determined I wasn't in for a voltage tweak, so it remained
an 867.
But, I recently purchased a new Dual 867, that after a couple days of
fooling around with I decided to take a shot at overclocking it to 1GHz
and see if any progress had been made. I dabbed some defroster repair paint on a couple places, restarted and lo and behold Dual 1GHz running reliably (so far 4-5 hours later).
During normal usage the fan stays somewhere between the lowest setting and the middle setting. It moves up and down fairly often. With dnet on it will move into the high sped setting every now and again. I'll leave dnet on for a few hours and see how it behaves.
Anyhow, thought I'd let you know that either I'm very lucky or the new
models have a little more headroom than the older ones.

"
The Systems page, G4 Macs section here has Michiro Isobe's G4 MDD CPU Module speed settings article posted last month. (Of course mods like this void the warrany and may not be reliable short or long-term.)

How to run Warcraft III in Windowed Mode |
(*Update* - several readers replied to the reader request below to say "Command+M" toggles windowed mode in WCIII. One reader also noted holding down the Option key when launching the game will run it in a window at the start. Performance is slower in windowed mode was another common note. Thanks to all that replied!)
"
Mike,
I'm trying to figure something out and am hoping one of
your readers may know what the solution is. Google has been useless
also. I am trying to figure out how to run Warcraft III in OS X in a
Window. The Apple.com review of the game says this is possible, but
nowhere (Readmes, Blizzard's support site, et cetera) is there
instruction on how to set this up. If you (or your readers) could
help, it would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Ben"

Still More Sonnet ATA/100 OS X 10.2 Driver Tip Comments |
The latest reader comments on the Sonnet ATA/100 OS X 10.2 driver tip in Monday's news. (I don't have any of these Sonnet cards personally, but this is the 3rd ATA/100 or Trio card owner that said it helped. Yesterday's news had a reader's comments that removing the driver worked also.)
"Hi Mike,
I followed Jim ("I'm not a Darwin programmer")'s "fix" (see link above) and it seems to have
worked for me. At least I'm now working out of Jaguar. As a real amateur,
I was concerned about really screwing this up but taking each step, one at a
time, it worked. Thanks to you, and to Jim for the help.
jim a."
This reader didn't note which tip he used but I wrote to ask and he said he replaced the driver with the older version (1.1.3 I assume).
"
Hi,
This tip realy works. When I added my Sonnet ATA/100, my G3 B&W rev1
wouldn't boot either with 10.2. Now it works like a charm.
Kind regards,
Stefaan B.
Belgium"
Another reader mail on this from yesterday:
"Hi Mike, I just wanted to let you know that I also tried the suggestion
of removing the Ultratek100.kext. (noted in yesterday's news.) I booted into OS 9 and then just
manually dragged the extension to the OS 9 desktop, so I still had it
in case anything went wrong. After re-hooking up my card and drives, I
booted, set the start-up disk, rebooted, hoped for the best, and....
success! Same thing that Jed DiPaola reported happened. Verbose logging
reported that it was "loading Ultratek100.kext from archive" and it
booted flawlessly.
Now let's see what Sonnet plans to do as an official fix (since when I
talked to them it didn't sound like they'll be waiting for Apple's next
update to fix this problem.) For the meantime, though, this will do
just fine.
-Christian W."
Another reader reported rumors of a sonnet 'fix' due soon
(either driver or firmware update I assume) but nothing official from Sonnet
so far.

The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
