Free 50Point Bezier Matte filter for Final Cut Pro and Express
(from reader post)

" I've just updated my 50Point Bezier Matte filter for Final Cut Pro and Express. Free of course, which is why it took over a year.
Enjoy, Tom H.
(clip from his web page)

50 Point Bezier Matte is a filter for Final Cut Pro (and Final Cut Express) that lets you create a garbage matte with up to 50 points. Unlike the 4 and 8 point garbage matte filters that come with Final Cut Pro, 50 Point Bezier Matte lets you create curves between the points instead of straight lines. This allows you to easily create a mask to extract almost any element you need.
Each point can be turned on and off independently, so you only have to position the points you need, and the points can be animated using keyframes, allowing you to extract a moving object for instance. "

Another iPod owner report on 2100mAh battery runtime (23hrs plus)
Last Monday I mentioned that I saw 21hours of runtime with the Newer Tech 2100mAh battery in my original 5GB iPod during a continious runtime test. A reader sent a note this weekend he saw even longer runtime with it in his 2nd gen. 20GB iPod:

" Thanks to your site, I bought the 2100 mAh replacement battery for my 2nd Gen 20 GB iPod. The results are incredible:

The Test - Shuffle Songs ON, Sound Check and EQ OFF, Volume set at 3/4, a comfortable listening level, iPod Software version 1.4. 90% of my songs are AAC format at 128 bitrate, and the average song length is 5 minutes.

I hit play at MIDNIGHT on Friday, and let the iPod continuously run. No track skips, no backlight, no volume adjustments. After 309 songs, the iPod finally gave the battery warning and shut down at 11:35 PM Saturday night. That's right....23 HOURS AND 35 MINUTES later, the iPod ran out of power! Instead of buying a new iPod, this is the best $39 I ever spent! Or, if I decide to sell it on eBay, this will stand out above the rest!

Just thought you would be interested in hearing about another report with this fantastic battery replacement!
Peter H. "

I agree this is the biggest bang for the buck upgrade I've ever had. The 2100mAh iPod battery sells for $39.95 and includes an installation guide and tools. (You can download the PDF install guide from the link on the product page.) As mentioned in the previous post, if you purchase the 2100mAh battery you can get the NewerTech RoadTrip! FM Transmitter device for only $9.99 if you use the coupon code "ROADTRIP" at checkout. (Offer ends Sept. 30th.)

More info on PodLock
(from a reader mail in reply to last week's news post asking for more info on Podlock that was legible in the translated japanese vendor page )

" Podlock is a bit different.
The software have been developed by Micromat or with the help of Micromat. There 2 functions:
  1. Repair and protect iPod HD, with some maintenance routines.
  2. The other part is a password function. There are no information of the way you enter password. Perhaps it is just turn the wheel 2 times on the right, one time on the left.

The application uses 500 MB of the iPod HD space, which is quite a lot for an 4 GB mini iPod.
Some software developed by Act 2 has a basic English localisation or help menu in english. But not all of them. I don't know the situation for Podlock.
Another HD maintenace editor is working on a similar (HD maintenance utility for iPod) : ProSoft
I am living in Tokyo, and am an editor for a French Mac website called mac4ever.
Laaapin "

A reader from Japan later wrote:

" I was briefly intrigued by the information on PodLock. It is claimed to be a Micromat product, although currently available only in Japan (I wonder if Micromat Inc. knows about this!?)

The previous response from Laaapin suggested that the program uses 500MB of HD space. My reading is slightly different. You can use this software to specify (or limit) the amount of HD space for storing regular data when using the iPod or -mini as an external disk. It creates a separate volume on the desktop for this purpose, and it is this separate data volume which can be password protected. Data volume creation requires a minimum of 500MB continuous empty space on the iPod's disk. (They recommend that iPod minis be reinitialised to ensure this much space is available.)

Regular iPod song data is not password-protected by this utility.

If it is real maybe this product will offer a simple solution for some folks. For over a year now I have used a password protected .dmg file on my iPod - it does virtually the same thing and cost me nothing. As for the other functions of PodLock... Who has ever heard of song file fragmentation becoming a problem on an iPod?

(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
