About Carmageddon Fix

This is a quick hack I made to make Carmageddon work with Voodoo 1 cards with more then 4MB of memory [Note - the Villagetronic MacPicasso/3D Overdrive's 8MB card does not work with the patch, as it's not a std 3D only PCI card. As noted in my review of the MP540/3D0, it does 3Dfx in a window and can't use the std 3Dfx voodoo1 tweakers, etc. The MacMagic 8MB Voodoo1 card (reviewed here) is said to not need this patch.-Mike]. To use it, move it into the same folder as your Carmageddon application, set the 'STR ' 128 resource to match the filename of the Carma 3dfx app (the default is "Carmageddon 3dfx (U.S. version)" for those of you who don't have ResEdit or Resorcerer), then launch the Carmageddon Fix app. It will:

• Load the Glide library
• Change one instruction to fool the library into thinking your 3dfx card only has 4MB
• Launch the Carmageddon app (using the filename specified in the STR 128 resource)
• Wait until you quit Carmageddon
• Change the instruction back to what it was before

Carmageddon Fix makes its change in memory only. The copy of the glide library on disk is left untouched.

Using this program, Carmageddon 3dfx is 100% stable with my Pure 3D card. It should work just as well on other cards and on other systems, provided you are using the same TechWorks drivers I used to develop the fix. If something goes wrong, the program will unceremoniously quit. If this happens, either the filename of the Carma app is different than what is in the STR 128 resource or you are using a different version of the drivers.
