AirPort Client Update 2009-002 for OS X 10.6.2
"AirPort Client Update 2009-002
This update is recommended for all Macintosh computers running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and includes fixes for the following:
  • Inability to turn AirPort on or off in some cases after upgrading from Mac OS X Leopard
  • An occasional loss of network connection when using Wake on Demand
  • Inability to create a computer-to-computer network, or share the Internet connection on some MacBook, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini computers
    System requirements: OS X 10.6.2"
  • Apple's forums have had threads on Airport problems w/SL from some mac owners (later model notebooks and minis IIRC) and hopefully this update fixes that. On the two macs w/SL here (early 2009 MacBook Pro 17in and 2009 Mac Pro) I've not seen any problems turning Airport on/off, but not used some of the features mentioned (wake on demand, etc.) - basically just using airport to share a DSL connection.

    SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0
    "SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0
This update will eliminate the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on your Mac. This update works with the following EFI updates:
iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.4 (from May 2009 - ati 4850 fix)
Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.2 (from Aug 31, 2009)
MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4 (new release - see below)
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 (new release - see below)

To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/SuperDrive Update.app). The updater will launch automatically when the installation is complete.
For detailed information about this update, please visit this website: About SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0.
(System requirements: OS X 10.5.7 or later)"

This update appears in SU on a early 2009 17in MBP w/Matshita UJ-868 - before firmware was KA19 - after update firmware version is KB19. I had heard the clicking noises from the drive on wake from sleep (and boot) - but waking it after the update has no more clicking. At boot however I still hear a slight noise (didn't appear loud like it was originally when waking from sleep - maybe a boot drive check for a disc?) Not a big issue for me either way although stopping the clicks (almost like a disc eject sound) after wakes is a plus and might reduce some wear/tear on the drive mechanism. (Earlier this year there was an apple doc about resetting some drives to stop that noise also IIRC...)

MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8 and MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4
"MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.8
This update eliminates the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on MacBook Pro computers. When installation is complete, please run Software Update again, and install SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0

To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update.app). The updater will launch automatically when the installation is complete.

Boot ROM or SMC Version Information: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3706.
MacBookPro5,1 will be updated to MBP51.007E.005
MacBookPro5,2 will be updated to MBP52.008E.005
(System requirements: OS X 10.5.7 or later)"

BTW - this firmware update does not appear in SU on a (early 2009 17in) MacBook Pro 5,2 w/existing firmware version MBP52.008E.B05. (vs ".005" mentioned above.) Tried to apply it manually from the download and it says it's not needed for this MBP. The Superdrive firmware update 3.0 however does appear in SU. (Added notes to above post on that.)

    "MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.4
This update eliminates the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on MacBook computers. When installation is complete, please run Software Update again, and install SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0

Latest status update on Crucial M225 SSD firmware Updates (incl. GC)
(From a Crucial SSD forum moderator's comments)

"We are in the final stages of testing of a new firmware, that will resolve the performance degradation issues seen in the 1819 update. We will release two versions, one with active garbage collection and one without.

Every effort is being made to release this update prior to the holiday, however we don't have a final release date yet. As always, we will post updates new updates as we receive them."

Good to hear that M225 owners will finally be getting a GC firmware version like OCZ offered back in October. (They released Trim (v1.4) and GC (v1.41) versions of their v1819 equiv. firmware for Vertex SSDs.)

Question for Drive Genius 2 users (regarding SMART reporting features)
I sent a Prosoft contact this same question but if any readers are using Drive Genius 2, please let me know what you think of it's SMART reporting. Among its many features is S.M.A.R.T Status ("Read and display S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic codes") but wondering how detailed it is. (Although as mentioned before here attributes and their values can vary by drive mfr/model, etc. and there's been debate over the subject in general. Don't want to stir all that up again...)
[Apparently it does not show details on attribute values that Smart Utility does (which costs $25). Someone else mentioned (free) command line (no GUI) S.M.A.R.T. Monitoring Tools at SourceForge. (Not tried it personally - if anyone has w/snow leopard let me know.)]
