More info on new iMac's HD + SSD Option (with service part info)
Yesterday's post on the new iMacs mentioned the 27in model has an option for both an SSD + Hard drive. As a FYI for anyone considering the 27in w/o the SSD option and wanting to add it later, OWC has a blog page with a photo of the new 27in iMac motherboard - 27in Mid 2010 iMac Disassembled. They mention the bracket (and special cabling) is only included if you order an SSD. But I suspect someone may post the service part info for these, or perhaps some company may come up with their own kit if the OEM parts are hard to get or overly expensive. They also comment on ideas of using the extra SATA port for eSATA, which would require a housing mod.
(Since the HD + SSD option is only available on the 27in, I assume the 21.5in motherboard doesn't have the extra SATA port. If someone knows otherwise, send a note.)
Update: Here's a reply from my friend Kevan with info on the service parts:

"I have had a look over the Service Manual for the new iMac. Retrofitting an SSD...

1.AC/DC/SATA Power Harness (922-9155) needs to be replaced with AC/DC/SATA/SSD Power Harness (922-9531).
Comparing the two harness pictures shows that the power connector for the SSD is simply a flying lead that is daisy-chained from the Hard Drive power connector. The adventurous could easily modify the existing cable :-)

2. SSD Data Cable must be installed 922-9538.
No clear picture of this cable. Plugs into the rear of the logicboard. Standard SATA connector. (The adventurous could route this out of the iMac to an external SATA array)

3. Optical/MXM Pressure Wall (922-9241?) must be replaced with Optical/MXM/SSD Pressure Wall (922-9485?)
The service manual only lists one version of this 'Pressure Wall'. However, the illustration seems to show two different versions (one without the plate that the SSD mounts to).

I am not 100% sure if a different bracket is required for SSD installation. The manual seems to contradict itself. Unsure of the Apple P/N's for this component.

There is also a note that the SSD-only option must have the following installed.
1. HDD Temp Sensor Jumper 922-9628.
This is simply a small jumper that shorts out the temp sensor connector on the logicboard, when an HD is not present, to prevent the fans running at full speed.

Kevan Gordon

Info on Updated ATI drivers in new iMac 10.6.4 Update
Yesterday I posted a FYI on the OS X 10.6.4 update for mid-2010 iMacs (which have ATI 5xxx GPU options) and from the notes on the update it included updated GPU drivers. (I suspected for 5xxx series, but apparently a 48xx update also.) Here's a reader mail about updated drivers in the download:

" I don't have a new imac, I just wanted to use pacifist and try to yank updated video drivers out of it. It's not just iMacs suffering video driver performance issues, but apple is stubborn as hell when it comes to driver updates...

    (he later wrote)
    new ati drivers version comparison

10.6.4 driver (from std 10.6.4 release)

    ATI4800Controller:
    Version: 1.6.16
    Get Info String: ATI4800Controller 1.6.16.11 (8209)
    Location: /System/Library/Extensions/ATI4800Controller.kext

From the OS X 10.6.4 mid 2010 iMac installer:
    ATI4800Controller 1.6.18.13 (8408)

also includes a new file ATI 5000Controller for the new cards.
(other GPU series drivers also included in the download, including Nvidia but I don't know of they're any later than those in the original 10.6.4 update release.)

(I asked Adam if he tried the updated 48xx driver to let me know if he saw any pros or cons. (Also asked if he saw any updated GL frameworks vs 10.6.4 std release.)
GL didn't appear updated. my 4870 card seems to get slightly smoother graphics in wow with new drivers. but then again I had lost a slight bit of performance with 10.6.4 so I don't think it's really a driver improvement so much as a driver fix from 10.6.4.
    -Adam W."

I assume the ATI 5xxx drivers are later than the ones included in the first release (later removed) of the 2010 Mac Mini 10.6.4 updater. (Ref: July 2nd news page post Drivers for Radeon 5xxx series in new Mini OS X 10.6.4 image. That same page also had a post about hackintosh users running Nvidia Fermi cards in OS X, using fermi series drivers (later removed) in the original GTX-285 update for 10.6.4)
