  • How to Tell if your LG OLED TV has an "EX" OLED Panel
Check General > OLED Care > OLED Panel Care > Pixel Cleaning.
If the time in the Pixel Cleaning note is 10 minutes, you have the latest EX OLED Panel.
If the note says 1 hour, then it's a previous panel version (WBE or WBC).
(Both the WBE & EX panels use Deuterium, but EX panels removed the sensing lines used for pixel wear compensation in previous panels. TVs with EX panels use Machine Learning instead of sensor measurements. This resulted in the reduction in time to complete the major compensation cycle from 1 hour to 10 minutes, and removing the sensor lines allows for a higher pixel aperture ratio.)

A press release said EX panels were being shipped after 2nd Quarter 2022. My August 2022 build US 48" C2 has an EX panel. (For 2023, the LG "META" TVs like the G3 & Z3 (except 83" IIRC) use the new "MLA" (Micro-Lens Array) OLED panels.)

To learn more about LG's EX & MLA OLED panels, YouTube has videos on the subject by LG, and HDTVtest has a video explaining the difference in EX vs previous WBE and WBC panels. (Larger Pixel Aperture ratio, higher efficiency, longer lifespan, etc.)

  • The Low-Cost, Backlit Universal Remote I Use with my LG TVs
I never liked the LG "Magic Remotes" included with LG TVs. I also didn't like Logitech's Universal Remotes. The best fit for my needs (features/ease of use/cost) has been the large button (all backlit) GE Universal Remote at Walmart, bought in store. (Years ago I paid under $15 in store.)

For my LG OLED TVs, I use LG code 6021 (from LG TV numbers in the printed manual in the package), that has the * button used for Info. (The Info button was removed on later LG bundled TV remotes.) I also use one to replace a failed OEM remote for a Samsung LCD TV.
    GE Remote image
I've used this remote with LG C2, E6, C6, & EF9500 OLED TVs, all with remote code 6021.
I'd almost given up on low-cost Universal Remotes, but this one doesn't feel cheap IMHO.
(I've bought 3 of them in-store, used for years now. About 7.5" Long. Uses 2 AA batteries.)

I saw reports of faster UI after13.30.50 update, but some said their TVs look dimmer after the update.
Also saw 2 reports of not being able to install an update to Netflix after updating to webOS 23.
And if you have any audio issues, check your Audio settings as some said they were reset.
Later saw bugs like Sleep Timer not working, Sharpness grayed out at 10 in Game mode.
(A tip for sleep timer was to change the time, the change it back to current time.)

(Since I don't use TV apps/not connected to internet, I'm staying at version 04.40.93 for now.)

(previous 04.40.91 update file wasn't recognized with 04.40.90 firmware.)
Note: 04.40.93 download file was twice the usual size, and unzips to two 04.40.93 files:
    lib32-starfish-global-secured-o22-meru-1905-04.40.93_prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk
    ib32-starfish-global-secured-o22-meru-190508-04.40.93_prodkey_usb_V3_SECURED.epk
(The 190508 file was recognized by my C2 with 04.40.90, the 1905 file wasn't - just like the .91 update.)

    I updated a (USA) 48" C2 (AUA) running 04.40.90 with the "19508" 04.40.93.
(My 48" had 04.40.90 because it didn't recognize the previous 04.40.91 update file.)
04.40.93 webOS version is 7.4.0-19508 (was 7.4.0-19 with 04.40.90 firmware).
No change in Dolby Vision version. Still 32.12 from the 04.40.90 update.

The 04.40.91 unzipped update was not recognized by my (USA) 48" C2 running 04.40.90.
(I used the same FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive that worked for 04.40.90 and others before.)
It recognized the flash drive, but navigating to the "LG_DTV" folder said "No Files Exist" in it.
(Tried recopying it, including recreating the directory - didn't help.)
Guessing it's either a bug in .90, or an incorrect 04.40.91 update file posted. TV is not connected to the internet, I don't use Apps, and have no problems so I'm going to pass on this update.
FYI: Since posting this I've seen many others report that .91 update file was not recognized.
I downloaded the update again on Feb. 21st, same issue. (Reports say .91 OTA updated OK.)

webOS version updated to 7.3.1-39 (was 7.3.0-2901 with firmware 03.33.16).
(03.33.65 didn't update Dolby Vision. Still version 32.09 from 03.33.15 update.)

03.33.65 Fixes C2/G2 ASBL Dark Scene Dimming Problems
It appears 03.33.65 also fixed the frustrating problem of dark scene auto-dimming (ASBL).
(Many complaints that non-static dark scene video was dimmed, not just static images.)
A UK forum post had a reply from LG support saying 03.33.65 does fix ASBL dimming.
(Just like the fix they did earlier for the 2023 LG C3/G3 models.)
C2/G2 Owner posts have confirmed the ASBL fix with firmware 03.33.65.

Since the previous Z2 firmware page had version 03.30.68, there may be some useful info in the change notes for the C2/G2 models updates below. (The first C2/G2 update after 03.30.68 was 03.33.15 that included audio changes and an updated Dolby Vision version.)

  • 03.33.16 Firmware Update for LG C2 PUA, C2 AUA, & G2 PUA OLED TVs

    • Minor software related issues fixed. (from KR change log)
webOS version updated to 7.3.0-2901 (was 7.3.0-29 with firmware 03.33.15).
No change in Dolby Vision version. (Still version 32.09 from 03.33.15 update.)
Hoping someday there will be an update to fix dark scene auto-dimming (ASBL).

Saw a G2 owner say he couldn't set a TV program reminder after the 03.33.16 update. That works with my OTA Antenna channels via the Guide. (I have no Cable TV or Internet connection on the C2 48".)

My 48" C2 isn't used with any Sound Bar or AVR using ARC, so I can't say if 03.33.16 fixes any issue with the Audio changes in the 03.33.15 update. I don't use the C2's Apps and don't have the TV connected to the internet, so I don't know if this update will help anyone that said they had Wi-Fi problems using some Apps with 03.33.15. (Saw reports that Wi-Fi problems were only with 5GHz mode, typically using channel 149, 80Mhz. One user suggested trying 40Mhz.)
FYI: If Quick Start+ is enabled, try disabling it & power off/restart. (I never use it on TVs or players.)

Some say this fixed darker video with some content (DoVi) after the 03.30.66 update.
I never noticed it but I didn't play any Dolby Vision content with 03.30.66 firmware.
Some also think 03.30.67 may have changed HDR10 DTM (Dynamic Tone Mapping).

    I updated a 48" C2 TV March 31st using a direct download file.
(I'm told all C2/G2 models use the same firmware, regardless of region.)
webOS version updated to 7.3.0-2402 (was 7.3.0-2401 with firmware 03.30.66).

  • Fix for LG 83" C2/G2 TVs with Power On Problem
FYI to owners of LG 2022 83" G2/C2 OLED TVs that require 2 presses of remote's button to power on. There's reportedly a replacement power supply board that fixes this problem. (One report said it was a capacitor problem.) The board with the problem is said to have a serial number (sticker) that ends in 1.0 - an owner that had the board replaced said the new board S/N ends in "(1.2)". Some said any board serial number ending with 1.1 or later should have the fix, but I don't own an 83" to verify that.
(Check the Serial Number sticker. The circuit board is still REV 1.0.)
I've heard as of mid-January 2023 there's an LG service bulletin number GLZ202200063-01 on this.

Reportedly fixes HDCP 2.2/2.3 problems with some later 1 series TV builds.
(A guess was a component change due to supply issues with the original part.)
Some said after the update they had to shut down & unplug the TV for a few minutes for the HDCP issue to be fixed. I wondered if they had "Quick Start" enabled. I never use that feature.
(When I unplug my TV, I then press the power button on the TV to discharge capacitors.)
If you still have HDCP issues, try resetting the TV. (Record any non-standard settings first.)

  • (May 8, 2020) LG UBKM9, UBK90, UP970 4K UHD Player Firmware Update
(See above for a later firmware and servo update in June 2022.)
May 2020 Firmware was BD39.338.91219.C, and Servo updated to UP17SONA018.
(Note above firmware version number periods as shown in Software Update panel,
after the update, Software Info menu item shows BD.39338.91219.C.)

I saw a forum post that said they emailed support and was later told this firmware update was just an "Application" update. I believe it's more than that, since the UP870 model also got a Firmware (and Servo) update, and it has no Apps. (No Wi-Fi, Ethernet port only for getting firmware updates.)
I believe the Firmware & Servo (drive) updates are for playback/compatibility issues.
I confirmed that 3D still works after this update. Tested with LG E6 TV and Avatar 3D disc.
(Still has no Auto mode for 24Hz vs 60Hz setting. See previous notes below.
And still no way to disable HDMI Control (CEC). Some use a CEC Blocking HDMI adapter.)

  • (May 8, 2020) LG UBK80, UP875, UP870 4K UHD Player Firmware Update
(See above for a later firmware and servo update in 2022.)
May 2020 Firmware was BD38.819.91219.C, and Servo updated to UP17SONA018.
(Note above firmware version number periods as shown in Software Update panel,
after the update, Software Info menu item showed BD.38819.91219.C.)

Like most player firmware updates, I assume it's to fix issues/improve compatibility.
As I mentioned in the UBKM9/UBK90/UP970 update above, I don't think this is only an "Application" update, as the UP870 has no Apps, and also got the same Servo (drive) update.

3D Still Works after this Update
After seeing 1 complaint from an owner (with LG G6 TV), I tested my updated LG 870 (and 970 above) and confirmed that 3D still works after this update. I used my LG E6 TV and the same 3D disc (Avatar 3D) he used. (Make sure 3D is set to On in the player settings. Player set to 24Hz.)
Everything in the HDMI chain must support 3D, including the Receiver. If in doubt, connect the player directly to the 3D TV. (My Avatar 3D disc boots up with a 3D mode note. The disc's Play menu offers a 3D or 2D option.)

And I didn't notice any increase in drive noise. (There were many early complaints on LG UP970 player noise, but that wasn't a common problem with my players. I did have one disc (Flight of the Phoenix remake) that was out of balance (off-center label IIRC, but also check the disc edge for excess plastic) and sounded like a buzz saw in every player. A replacement disc was OK.)

My UP870 is a spare now, replaced by a Panasonic DP-UB420 ($149.99 on sale).
Surprised to see a Firmware & Servo update for the UP870. ($25 in WM store, January 2018.)
(I wish they would change the Eject's screen to something other than a solid bright white, and hoped for an "Auto" output Hz option, but it still has only 24Hz or 60Hz setting as noted years ago.)

  • (May 12, 2018) LG UP870/875 4K/UHD Player Firmware Update
(See above for a later firmware update.)
May 2018 Firmware version BD38.819.80420.C. In "Software Info" menu it's listed as BD.38819.80420.C, and also lists "Servo Ver: UP17SON0017" - the same servo version as before. As usual, no info on changes/fixes and no firmware download on LG support page. This $25 Walmart sale UP870 in January has been quiet (knock on wood) and so far reliable. Checked the menus after the update - still no way to disable HDMI Control (CEC), but not an issue for me as I don't use ARC or CEC. (If you do, there are CEC blocking HDMI adapters under $20.)

  • Notes on 3D OLED TVs - CC Times, Burn-In, Bad Pixels, Crosstalk Tests
A 55E6 sample shows much shorter CC times than normal, based on other 2016 and 2015 OLED models tested. Details on this page. Updated with notes on Screen Uniformity, Banding, Tint, IR/Burn-In and Dead/Stuck pixel Tests, 3D Crosstalk Tests and screen tilt.

  • LG UP970 4K UHD Player Dolby Vision Firmware Updates
Update: See above for a later firmware update.
    (April 17th, 2018 - FW BD.39338.80329.C. No change info. Servo still UP17SON0017.)
    (March 6th, 2018 - FW BD.39338.80220.C. No change info. Servo still UP17SON0017.)
LG UP970 Dolby Vision Firmware Update available via the player's update check, at least in some areas. (There have never been any firmware update downloads at LG's support page for the UP970.) First report said Feb. 8th Dolby Vision enabled firmware was version BD.39338.80207.C. ("Servo Ver: UP17SON0017", same as UP870 below) And that Netflix App still always in Dolby Vision mode, just like the Feb. 5th release. As noted earlier, the Feb. 5th update (quickly pulled) locked the player to region A regardless of original region code. To date, LG 4K players still DO NOT support Sony's "low latency" Dolby Vision enabled TVs.

FYI: Some AVRs aren't Dolby Vision compatible. If yours isn't, use the UHD Player's main HDMI port cable direct to the DV TV and the player's 2nd HDMI connection to the AVR for Audio.

As mentioned earlier, for 4K/UHD HDR movies remember to select 24Hz in Settings -> Display -> Display Mode. (If set to 60Hz, LG will output at 8-bit 4:2:2. If set to 24Hz, output is 4:4:4 12-bit. See previous notes below.)

  • (Jan. 31, 2018) $25 LG UP870 4K/UHD Player in some Walmarts (expired)
Saw web posts earlier in January about the LG UP870 4K/UHD (HDR-10, 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/CD) Player in stores at some Walmarts ringing up $49, or $25 in some cases. (This is a bare-bones player - single HDMI 2.0a, no Dolby Vision, no Apps, no Wi-Fi. Ethernet (for firmware updates only), USB and Optical Audio port. PDF user manual, specs, etc are here.) Walmart's Web page showed 'see price in cart' at post time (1/31/2018), but again reports said the $25 price was in stores with stock. (It was still that price as of Jan. 31st, 2018 at a local Walmart when I bought one there.) LG's UP870 page had $199.99 MSRP (?? wow, I thought it was $99.xx at retailers before. The higher end UP970 had sometimes been on sale for $150 in stores.) While shopping at Walmart I asked a clerk to check stock in the back. (None on the shelf, but brickseek showed 5 in stock at this store priced at $25.) Initial clerk comment was they were all gone, but agreed to check the back stockroom and brought 2 out. Price check showed $25, so I bought one (should have gotten both at that price). Again YMMV as by now all stores may be OOS. (Also saw some reports of scalpers buying all stock at some locations.)

This UP870 (September 2017 build) sample shipped with firmware BD37.226.70710.C, updated to BD37.226.80117.C via Ethernet. In "Software Info" menu it's listed as BD.37226.80117.C, and also lists "Servo Ver: UP17SON0017". As usual, no info on changes/fixes and no firmware download on LG support page. UP870 seems quiet so far (To date, only the Last Jedi 4K disc made any noticeable vibration - in main disc menu primarily), and a steal at $25. The small Remote has only 1 battery, IR signal seems weak. No way to disable HDMI Control (CEC), although I don't use it, so not an issue personally. (If you need CEC or ARC, get a CEC blocking HDMI adapter.)
Simple user interface, but the bright solid white screen when the tray is ejected is a really bad idea IMO. I was pleasantly surprised to see the UP870 has a Subtitle shift (position) option.

LG Player Output Frame Rate Setting Note:
(Note: The below info was posted before 4K/UHD 60P discs (i.e. Gemini Man, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk) were released. I'm not sure how these LG players output those UHD 60P discs if set to 24Hz. LG really should have an "Auto" framerate setting. I don't know if the UHD/60P 8-bit was fixed in May 2020 firmware updates for UBKM9, UBK90, UP970 & UBK80, UP875, UP870 players.)
The UP870/875 and UP970 have a setting for either 24Hz or 60Hz output (no "Auto") in the Player's home screen Settings -> Display -> Display Mode. If set to 24Hz, DVDs play at 30Hz (and look poor typically), so should be set to 60Hz for DVD playback, and switched to 24Hz when playing Blu-rays - especially 4K/UHD HDR discs, as if set to 60Hz the output will be 8-Bit. (HDR10 content is 10-bit. Dolby Vision FEL content is 12-bit (for "TV led" DV, it's sent over HDMI in RGB 8-bit container), but the UP870/875 player doesn't support Dolby Vision.) My receiver reported 8-Bit 4:2:2 for UHD HDR discs when the UP870 was set to 60Hz - when set to 24Hz, it reported 12-Bit 4:4:4. (It's not unusual for some players to output 12-bit for 10-bit UHD discs, even the Oppo 203 does that (usually 12-bit 4:2:2). Both Blu-ray and 4K/UHD disc content is 4:2:0, but chroma upscaling is done by the player and/or TV.)
