BTW: Had several mails about running dimms in like sets of 3 for triple channel mode vs dual-channel if using only 2 slots or 4 slots. (Mentioned when the 2009 Mac Pros were first released.) I suspect he is aware of that but noted it on his comments page. The above post is just trying to determine why he has the problem he reported with two 16GB dimms.

(There was also a reminder on the "X" series Xeons (dual CPU support/dual QPI, larger memory addressing) vs the single CPU "W" series. The X series listed for a much higher price but were required for Dual CPU motherboards. However some have used an X series in a single CPU motherboard. Apparently getting a great price at ebay on them.)

Also mentioned again was the unofficial flashing of Mac Pro 5,1 EFI/bootrom (that 2010-2012 mac pros have) in a 2009 Mac Pro 4,1 but Gene's 2010 Mac Pro already has 5.1 bootrom. (As mentioned before, the 5,1 bootrom added 'Westmere' 6-core CPU support (including X56xx support), 1333MHz ram support and MDP audio, IIRC.)

There's some previous reports on these upgrades on the macs/mods page. Most recent one added in June to a previous page on 2009 Mac Pro 12-core upgrades and a 2009 Mac Pro (flashed to 5,1) that upgraded to a single X5690 (3.46GHz) CPU in the June 26th news archive. (I welcome reports like this but didn't want to put that on Gene's page about the problem he has currently.)

As of post time (July 30th), the page refers to CUDA 7.0.52 in the text, but the link still routes to CUDA 7.0.36 from April 9th. Here's a link to CUDA 7.0.52 for OS X 10.10.x and 10.9.x from July 2nd news. As before, it has this note on older GPU support:

"This driver does not support older generation GPUs with SM1.x."

As I mentioned in the news post on the f02 driver, CUDA 7.0.52 was posted when driver 346.01.03f01 was released but assume it supports the new 346.02.xxx drivers since I've not heard otherwise. (In the past they updated CUDA releases to include support for later graphics driver version numbers, but maybe 7.0.52 already included support. That internal numbering dependency was a bad idea IMO. Mentioned in older posts on CUDA lib edits like this one.)
(Update: On August 10th, Nvidia posted CUDA 7.0.61 for OS X.)
  

"Problem with Latest nVidia Graphics Driver?
After updating my nVidia driver from version 346.01.03f01 to the latest 346.02.02f02, I noticed many random "unexpected" closures of Safari (v8.07). Since the only change I had made on my computer was that nVidia update, I downloaded and reinstalled the previous version. I have not seen any further problems with Safari since doing that.

My "Hackintosh" 'thinks' it is a 2008 Mac Pro (3,1), so it does fall within the hardware applications listed for the latest nVidia driver, but I have no further information on the apparent bad effect on Safari. (any addons for Safari installed? Can you try Firefox to see if it's reliable?)

If you hear of any similar problems that seem to be connected to 346.02.02f02, please let me know. thanks!

I also had these random closures of Safari 8.07 but I got an automated upgrade notice to Nvidia 346.02.02f03 yesterday and after upgrading to f03 the problem seems fixed so far. (Mac Pro 2010, 10.10.4, GTX980)
I can still see some garbled pictures but less and less.

Thanks to Wolf F. for the help on Safari's issue due to the slightly earlier version (f02) of nVidia's driver. I updated and now all is OK. Quite a "kerfuffle" over the past recent revisions!
