macOS Big Sur 11.5 (build 20G71) released
(On July 26, Apple released Big Sur 11.5.1 with an important security fix.)
Released via software update. Info from What's new in macOS Big Sur 11.5:
"macOS Big Sur 11.5 includes the following improvements for your Mac:
- Podcasts Library tab allows you to choose to see all shows or only followed shows.
This release also fixes the following issues:
- Music may not update play count and last played date in your library.
- Smart cards may not work when logging into Mac computers with the M1 chip."
Here's info on What's new for enterprise in macOS Big Sur 11.5:
- MDM administrators can use the new SetRecoveryLock command to set a password on a Mac with Apple silicon that will be required to enter macOS Recovery.
- MDM administrators can now use the DeviceLock command to lock a Mac with Apple silicon with a six-digit PIN and an optional message.
- Resolves an issue where network extensions that require Rosetta 2 fail to load on first startup after a software update.
- Resolves an issue where System Profiler becomes unresponsive when collecting hardware data.
- SmartCard login no longer fails on Mac computers with Apple silicon when using the checkCertificateTrust key.
- Resolves an issue where MDM app installations may fail when using a proxy configured with a PAC file.
- Resolves an issue where Mac computers with Apple silicon boot to recoveryOS after using
startosinstall -eraseinstall .
Here's the article on security fixes in macOS Big Sur 11.5 (very long list).
(Make sure you have a backup before updating. I reboot and update with no apps running. If using any 3rd party Security software, disable or remove it before updating, and make sure you have adequate free space on the volume. (Apple doesn't list required space for Big Sur updates, but lists 35.5GB or more for upgrades from macOS Sierra or later.) If you have trouble installing the update, try updating from Safe Mode. If all else fails, try downloading the full macOS install from the App store.)
A friend updated her M1 mini from macOS 11.3.1 to 11.5 OK (using Safe Mode boot). M1 Mini firmware version now 6723.140.2. (She never updated to macOS 11.4, so not sure if that had a FW update. Her M1 Mini firmware in macOS 11.3.1 was 6723.101.4.)
Check for feedback in Apple's Big Sur forum. (Replies may be in previous problem threads.)
And for M1 owners, also check the Mac Mini, iMac, MacBook Pro, & MacBook Air forums. |
