Jumper Tips for Western Digital 6Gb/sec HDs in G5 Macs (or other SATA1 models):
A couple readers with G5 macs (iMac G5, G5 tower) have written on problems getting a WD SATA drive recognized in the system, requiring a HD jumper setting. The G5 Macs have SATA I (1.5Gb/sec) interfaces and although some HDs will auto negotiate, some may not and require jumper settings to force a lower speed mode.
The latest mail on this was from an iMac G5 owner (thanks Bevin) with a 1TB WD Caviar Blue WD10EALX (EALX = 6Gb/sec model, EALS = 3Gb/sec model) - noting installing a jumper across pins 5-6 was required for the drive to be recognized in the G5.
A WD kbase page (no longer online) included a jumper settings image that shows Jumper 5-6 - called "Opt1" for SATA 3Gb drives (forcing SATA 1.5Gb mode) and "PHY" for SATA 6Gb drives (forcing SATA 3Gb mode).
(Update/FYI: The July 23rd, 2014 news has a similar tip (having to force SATA1 mode) for Seagate SATA3 Drives from a 2007 MacBook owner that installed an SSDHD (hybrid) drive.)
