WD shipping 1TB (and 750GB) Scorpio Blue 2.5in Hard Drives
Western Digital has a press release today on their new Scorpio Blue 1TB 2.5in hard drive (a 750GB model also available). MSRP for the WD Scorpio Blue 1 TB is $249.99 USD and $189.99 USD for the 750 GB model.
However note both the 1TB and 750GB models are 12.5mm high - too tall for many notebooks that can only take 9.5mm high HDs, including most pre-unibody MacBook/MacBook Pro models (except for the 17in MacBook Pro) - although IIRC the Unibody models (at least the ones with removable battery) could take 12.5mm high HDs. (Based on a past post here in the Dec 15th, 2008 news page.)
And I think the SATA mini's in the past were also 9.5mm high max (but not sure on the new 2009 mini models.)
If anyone knows if the new mid-2009 MacBook/Pros (or new Minis) can use a 12.5mm HD, let me know. Thanks.
(BTW - got a reply that the mid-2009 13in MacBook Pros can use 12.5mm high drives and assuming 15in-17in can also, like the previous Unibody models could but no confirmation on that yet.)

OpenGL Extensions Viewer (GLview) v3.13
Eddie sent a FYI on a recent OpenGL Extensions Viewer 3.13 release which they say "Added OpenGL 3.1 detection. Improved OpenGL 3.0 detection, added new renderers". OS X and Windows versions available. (No OpenGL 3/3.x support in OS X and still seeing 'max samples 0' in OS X report, although in Windows it reports 16x - the max FSAA the card supports.)

Mac CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade/OC database had another update this morning. Total to date: 10,383. Here's a summary of today's entry. (Search by upgrade brand, mac model, etc. for a complete list/comments of all user reports on matching criteria - latest first).

  • Sonnet Dual G4 1.6GHz (7447A) in (originally dual 867) G4 Mirror Drive Doors tower (rated 8)

(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the G4 upgrade reviews and G3 upgrade reviews pages. Intel-CPU chip swaps (i.e socketed Mac Mini) and OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, send a review with your experience (performance/stability/installation, etc.), Mac Model/Upgrade brand info and overall rating (1= worst to 10=best). If you can, please run some tests with the original CPU vs the upgrade (for example time some tests with your favorite app, game, etc. - see full reviews here for example tests with common apps/games/benchmarks.)
