Teardowns of 2010 Mac Mini Standard and Server models, Notes on special HD Cable/Sensors
iFixit posted their Teardown of the (non-server) 2010 Mac Mini and Macminicolo has a Teardown of the 2010 Server (dual HD) Mini model.
I didn't see it mentioned in those articles (maybe they'll add that later), but a reader sent a note yesterday they have special drive cables with (thermal) sensors. (I remember OWC posted a FYI on that same thing when the last iMac models were released. I'll write them to ask about that.)

"Mike, The HDDs in the Mac Mini (Regular and Server) have "special" sensors attached. Doing upgrades to larger drives may be difficult. These sensors (there is one on the drive cable and one attached to the drive) are thermal..."

Update - I went through OWC's older blog posts and found the article I remembered - Proprietary cable can put the brakes on upgrading Late '09 iMacs (posted Nov 2nd, 2009). That article noted "you can reuse the cable that came with your iMac as long as you replace the drive with another model from the same manufacturer ... we have confirmed (that) works properly with this thermal sensor cable." See the full article for more details.
I had mentioned the (late 09) iMac's cable to the reader above - here's his reply

"Yes, the iMacs had specific drives listed with temperature sensor cables for each model (Seagate, WD, Hitachi). But the mini has both a specific sensor cable, and HDD (320GB or 500GB). The server 500GB lists as 7200RPM, with sensor attached (looks like a board w/cable). However, it does look to me like you can order just the sensor cable to attach to the HDD....BUT there is still a cable that comes out of the mylar jacket.

iFixit didn't have their teardown up yet when I emailed you. I have an issue with them as they never show the proper ESD handling (wrist straps, ground, ESD tools...). And they don't show the HDD up close that the other sensor might be integral to the drive controller board, or might be stuck on. Details!..."

Update: On Friday a new 2010 Mac Mini server owner sent notes and photos about the drive temperature sensors taken during his dual SSD drive swap.
