G5 Coolant Leak/Repairs and MacBook Pro 8600M Failures/Repairs pages updated
I've updated the (huge) page on PowerMac G5 Leaks/Repairs with another case of coolant leak damage repaired for free (years out of warranty).
And added two more reports on the MacBook Pro/Nvidia 8600M failures/repairs page on getting new motherboards under the extended GPU warranty. (In both cases remember to not give up if initially refused a repair.)

32-bit Snow Leopard Drivers for Sil3124 based eSATA Cards
I can't remember if I'd posted any links to updated 3124 drivers since SL was released (and too tired right now to check) but regardless here's links from a reader that owns one of the many brands of 4 port PCIe cards using that chip:

"Just found this on the net:
FASTA-4e / 4x Snow Leopard 32-bit Driver
www.caldigit.com/support/CalDigit_FASTA4_2.0.4u.zip

And also on silicon image site: (later version)

    "SiI 3124 Mac OS X 10.6 & 10.6.1 BASE (non-RAID) BETA 10/8/2009 2.0.5
    SiI3124_2.0.5u_Sil_Pkg_BETA.zip (no longer online)
Use this BASE (non-RAID) driver with Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.6.1 for Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. Please contact the external enclosure or hard disk drive manufacturer for problems specific to the device."
(Same note they have on 3132 drivers and ditto for many other card mfrs/vendors. This is why I ask for info on external case/drive used in esata card reports.)
-R"

I asked he report back if he tries the driver(s) w/10.6.2. (Back in late august/early sept I had some 3124 card/SL owner reports - some noting problems, some not.)

Anyone running OS X 10.6.2 with Sil3132 v1.1.11u drivers? (updated w/replies)
(added more replies tonight)
Although I ran earlier drivers with OS X 10.6.0 (as did other readers since SL was first released) I'm no longer using the Sil3132 eSATA expresscard (replaced it with a natively supported single-port card in early Sept. - I installed the 1.1.11u driver update on the Mac Pro though (w/$20 Sil3132 eSATA PCIe card) but not exercised it since Sept. 4th article.) Anyway I'm curious if anyone's seen any issues or not using the Sil3132 1.1.11u drivers (SI called them beta) that were posted back in October (before 10.6.2 was released). The reason I ask is recd a mail today from someone noting KP's when their 3132 expresscard was inserted and mentioned installing drivers from a post here but didn't mention what post/what driver version nor any details on OS version (sounded like SL though).

Update Replies to this post (later first):

"I'm using the Sil3132 v1.1.11u driver in an 3Ghz 8-core with 16 gigs of 667 ram and flashed 1gig 4870 video card. I have a Vantec NextStar esata hard drive dock hooked to my Star Tech 2 port eSATA pci-E card. Snow Leopard 10.6.2

Flawless performance, very fast, just as fast as my internal 4 disk on transferring large FCP render files and considerably faster than my other external FW800 drives. I*m using 2 x Toshiba 750 gig hard disks and several 500 gig Western Digitals in and out of the dock all day long.

The dock can eject and accept disk changes on the fly and upon inserting a new disk it is instantly mounted. You also no longer have to have the external drive/dock turned on before starting your mac, you can can turn it off an on at will. (Eject/unmount HDs before removing them from the dock and I turn off my dock before removing/swapping in another HD - then power the dock back on (card still inserted).-Mike) It is every bit as easy to work with as a fire wire drive except faster. The convenience of the dock is spectacular and the performance of the card and drivers is exceptionally stable.
(I'm also primarily using HD docks with my eSATA card and I really like them - great for easily swapping in different HDs, reusing HDs from internal drive upgrades, doing clones/backups for different machines, etc. I know there's a place for multi-drive enclosures also, but the HD docks fill my needs just fine and are very handy.-Mike)

This card cost me $39 Canadian and the dock cost me $42 Canadian. I will now say goodbye to my routine of purchasing 5 or 6 new very expensive LaCie drives every year and having the power supply and/or power control board replaced every 6 months. Thanks for a great website, you have been a lot of help to me over the years.
-Art B."

BTW - also got a reply today from an older MBP user that's still running the 1.1.9 drivers w/o problems he said. (I assume like some of us he reinstalled it after the SL installer removed it - or installed it after the SL install)

" I have this (ASP report shows 3132 driver v1.1.9) and it's working fine on an older (expresscard slot) 15in MacBook Pro 2.6GHz w/4GB ram running 10.6.2.
Should I get the 1.1.11 drivers? I'm tempted to leave it alone since everything seems to work well (I'm using an eSata connection to a OWC ministack hub).
- Wally"

Personally if you're fine I'd leave well enough alone (the old 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' rule is often good advice).

"Re the query on using Sil3132 with 10.6.2, I haven't had any trouble with it since I got it working.
I just recently got a mac pro (current gen 8-core 2.26GHz) and installed a dynex (Best Buy) pcie 2-port sata card. (same PCIe card I commented on in the earlier "cheap eSATA cards" article.-Mike) I put 10.6.1 on the machine, and tried installing the official Silicon Image 1.1.11u driver, which panicked immediately, even tho nothing was attached. (I didn't see any KP here installing the SIL downloaded 1.1.11u drivers on a dual 2.66 09 Mac Pro here. It's never KP'd since (including 10.6.2 boots) - although as before, it's 32bit only and doesn't load if booting to 64bit kernel).-Mike) I hunted down Sonnet's repackaging of the driver and it worked immediately. (posted last month here - see above link.)
The drives I'm using are a rocketfish esata/usb2 case (with built in card readers if on USB) and a Seagate drive, and a western digital 1TB mybook USB2/FW800/esata.
I noticed no obvious performance change on my Mac Pro since updating to 10.6.2.
-Lycestra"

Not sure why he saw the KP on installing the SI site download (I didn't on similar machine). It mounted a HD in an eSATA HD dock back then but not connected anything to it since updating to 10.6.2. (Too many higher priority things going on since then...) But I did use sonnet's repackaged 1.1.9u driver before that release (as several readers did also - mentioned back when SL/10.6.0 first shipped in late August).
No idea what driver/version the expresscard user is getting KP's with but if he ever replies back that it was the SI driver I'll suggest he try sonnet's repackaged download.

More notes on running OS X 10.5.8 on late 2009 iMacs
Yesterday's news had several reader comments on running 10.5.8 on late 2009 iMacs (i.e. no airport card support, no display brightness adjust). None of the earlier reports mentioned this reader's issue (KP's with wired USB keyboard connected) but wrote to ask if they were using a std USB keyboard (see replies below):

"I've been having an issue with using our 10.5.8 image on the new iMacs. When a USB keyboard is plugged in during startup it gets a kernel panic. (I asked if a new model keyboard and if directly connected to the iMac, if he tried a different USB port, etc.)
Yes, connected directly to Mac. One of the new slim keyboards.
If you leave it unplugged during startup and connect after you've logged in, it works fine. Others may be using the wireless keyboard, but since ours was ordered without the numeric keypad (which the user wants), I been using a new Apple USB Keyboard.
Can the others who have posted see if they can replicate this? We only have one of the new 2009 21.5in iMacs... thanks
-Scott
Desktop Support Technician"

I wrote several readers that had commented earlier on using 10.5.8 on new iMacs about this - here's several replies with nobody else seeing a problem w/USB keyboard:

"I had no trouble with the keyboard. It is an Apple extended USB keyboard and the new bluetooth mouse. The only thing I saw was the banding on on the screen at startup that was noted by one of the other readers. (He had also noted earlier the common issues like no airport card support nor display brightness adjust w/10.5.8 on new iMacs)
Otherwise everything to be OK.
-James"

"Every keyboard we have is a full size, wired keyboard. No kernel panics at all.
-David V."

"No problem with KP's. Use wired keyboard.
-Hans"

This late 2009 iMac/10.5.8 user noted frequent KPs at boot but was using a wireless keyboard. (I was so tired I missed it originally but since he noted using a -wireless- keyboard, I asked if he'd installed Apple's Wireless Keyboard Update 2.0 for OS X 10.5.8 released on Monday. (As mentioned in that news page post - that update is included in OS X 10.6.2 but is a separate update for 10.5.8.)

"My experience has been similar to others concerning using 10.5.8. (We have to use 10.5.8 on one new iMac because the user relies on Now Up-to-Date 5.) As mentioned before, the Airport (card) doesn't work and neither do the brightness settings -- you can get around the latter by installing ScreenShade 1.3, by the way.

Concerning crashes at startup, ours is incessant and completely random. It'll crash four or five times, then on the sixth attempt it's fine. (We're using the wireless keyboard by the way. I'm going to try a wired keyboard unplugged later to see if it matters.) If you make it to the Apple logo and then the spinning circle at startup, it'll be OK; just the Apple, and it can still crash.
(He later replied he'd originally not installed the Wireless Keyboard Update 2.0 for 10.5.8 (didn't appear in software update). He did later (after doing another clean 10.5.8 install) and wrote)
OK, I've installed the update and will let you know -- as of now, one restart and No crash... MUCH appreciated.
-Charles"

Hopefully that helps solve this (otherwise I'd use a wired keyboard).
